Bryce Harper just signed the highest paid contract in sports history. He will be a member of the Philadelphia Phillie's, who were 80-82 in the standings last season. The contract is for $330 million for 13 years, and has a no trade clause. The San Francisco Giants, and the Los Angeles Dodgers lost out on the bidding for Bryce. Manny Muchado, formerly of the Los Angeles Dodgers, signed a 10 year $300 million contract with the San Diego Padres. The Chicago White Sox really wanted him. So, if you have a son, who will be playing Little League this summer, and he becomes very good, he could one day get one of these blockbuster contracts. The full regular baseball season begins next month. April. Boston won the World Series and the Superbowl during the 2018 Season.

It's nice seeing people being fairly compensated for their work.

Those type salaries are obscene. That's approximately $156,000 per game - approximately 2.5 hours. Nothing and nobody is worth that as long as people are starving and without a standard of living that supports a human being.

My opinion - I'm sure there will be many who disagree.

Even if they did get reasonable salaries, that money wouldn't be going to starving people. At least those guys put butts in the seats and eyes on the TVs. Compare that to CEOs who get golden parachutes even when their companies do poorly.

It is obscene, but my guess is that the market can tolerate it or they wouldn't pay it. As long as people continue to pay for it they will continue to pay these obscene salaries. You'd be in shock at the prices they were charging for a seat at the Superbowl game this year. The average man can't afford it, but this is how they pay those obscene salaries I'm guessing.

I saw this on Sports News ESPN TV last night. I was stunned in disbelief. Thanks for the calculations, on what is paid per game. Unbelievable!

It's all a part of the same scene. People support the outrageous salaries by watching TV and buying the advertised products. CEO's are simply at the top section of the pyramid along with overpaid athletes and media stars. And, I have to admit, I too watch TV. However, I do not watch live TV. I record everything of interest and zip through commercials.
Thanks for you comment.

Harper is not that good. He is a dugout troublemaker as well. Those who lost in the bidding war actually won. Chemistry is necessary to win championships and I doubt Harper will bring that to Philly. A player that wants to fight his teammates and coaches is not good.

$330 million for 13 years....

...Hmm.

That's about $25,384,615 per year

70% of that for taxes = $17,769,230

$25,384,615 - 17,769,230 = $7,615,385 what is left each year...

...depending on where this country is headed, capitalist or socialist.

Oops! Where's is the tornado shelter?

It has been reported today, that Philadelphia is in a frenzy, over the signing of Bryce Harper. Many left work early to go to Citizens Bank Park, to purchase tickets, for upcoming baseball games. Probably, the first home game. That's traditional in most major league baseball cities. The two highest paid baseball players, Bryce and Manny, will oppose one another, more than once. Because their teams are in the National League.

Working for the government about 44% of his time? Not bad. Bryce still gets 56%. You can still buy a mansion and fancy toys with that. I feel bad for Manny Muchado. He's in San Diego, California. The new California Governor, Gavin Newsom, is salivating, over how much California will be getting from his salary. He was a Dodger, but not making anything close to what he's making now. But, he will be OK too. Rich ahletes invest their money too. The foolish ones don't manage their money wisely. The smart ones hire accountants, to shield a lot of money from taxes. Don't feel sorry for either of these two baseball players. They are still better off than the rest of us.

I also find obscene such compensation for ephemeral production. It is a game isn't it? Not a product to have, hold, pass on to your children. How much did Michelangelo get paid?
