East Coast Cruise

While back I posted the we were thinking of taking a cruise down the coast of Mexico. Well, as things so often do, they change, and so have our plans. We are now planning a cruise up the East Coast from Boston to Halifax, NS, ending up in Montreal. It's a 7 day cruise, and will be in October. I'm looking for some ideas of what to photograph along the way. Stops include Bar Harbor, ME, Halifas, NS, Quebec City and Montreal. Last July was our 50th anniversary, but we didn't do anything to celebrate as my wife just had surgery on her shoulder and couldn't. So we are celebrating a year late. In addition, I think I am going to purchase a travel camera. The new Sony HX99 comes to mind as a good candidate. What say you all. I'm wanting some degree of reasonable zoom range, and a compact camera so I don't have to lug a big camera and lenses around. Mostly it's a matter of convenience.

My choices are:
Sony HX99. (RX100VI is a bit more than I can afford)
Panasonic Lumix ZS100 or 200

I guess what I want to know is, with a cruise like that, will, say 200mm be enough zoom or would I need greater zoom?
I'm open to suggestions, but no suggestions regarding DSLR's or mirrorless--MILC's. I already have one of each.

Congratulations to you and your beloved on your 50+1 Anniversary.

Be sure to allow plenty of time to see Boston before or after your cruise. There is so much to see here even within a walk from the Cruise Terminal. Follow the Harbor Walk to the Fed Courthouse for a magnificent evening view of the downtown skyline. Head out to Fort Independence on Castle Island. Visit 'Old Ironsides' (USS Constitution) in Charlestown. Take a short cruise around the harbor from the Aquarium or a Whale Watch cruise if you have an extra day. Fanueil Hall / Quincy Marketplace is always lively and interesting.

October should near peak fall color in Bar Harbor / Acadia NP. There are free shuttle buses from Bar Harbor around the park up until Columbus Day. Be sure to stop for a very English 'Tea and Pop-overs' at Jordan Pond House in the park.

200mm lens should be plenty for anything I can think of. Not to be unkind, but how long of a lens do you think you can hold steady without a tripod at your age. The HX99 has an equivalent FL of 24 - 720 mm. If you can handle half of that I take my hat off to you.

Enjoy your trip and post pics when you get back.

Thanks for the tips re: Boston and Bar Harbor. I've heard/read a lot about Bar Harbor, and from my motorcycling days, it seems to be a go-to destination when touring the east coast.

Hand hold 720mm? I actually don't too bad. IS helps a lot. I don't know that I actually "need" that much, but it's nice to know it's there in the event I do need it to get a shot. Keeping cost control in mind, the Lumix ZS100 seems to be a pretty good choice. I've got plenty of time to research and ponder.
