Hi Donna, I agree with gessman's suggestion to start a new thread in the BIF section where more participants will see and respond to your questions. To your request, this is actually two separate questions: what is a good AF Area setting, where I've had success with "zone" and "expanded single point", depending on the speed and level / erratic flight of the birds. Your second question about aperture / depth of field and is not directly related to the AF area. Personally, I find a much smaller aperture in the f/9 to f/11 range is needed to get larger birds like these brown pelicans in a depth of field that extends out to the wing tips. That smaller aperture has to be balanced with the available light and shutterspeed.
