What I've been working at is doing more with the "manual" setting. Have learned a lot about aperture and how manual settings can really improve one's photographs. The 5300 works fine, and so does my 3100, but the 5300 really kicked it up more than a notch. The 24 meg sensor really helps when I need to crop severely. Good luck with your new camera.

So there may be a new D750 up the road, so what? I’ll bet the price will be $2,500 or more. I spoke to someone with a budding interest about getting a great camera at reasonable price. The D750 with its price drop is exactly that. I’ve worked with and helped train many young photographers who chase after the latest and the greatest. Reality is that one never catches up. There is always a better, more sophisticated camera on the horizon. My advice has always been that once you have a good body and understand how to use it invests in quality lenses and learn the craft. As mention previously still have a 1969 Nikon FTN and I could still record great images with that camera because I couple it with a good lens and I have spent years honing my skills. While I may not be the best I’ll bet my 1969 FTN can out preform a lot of people with a D850 or whatever is next up the ladder. Keep in mind that a camera body is in the end only a recording device. The photographer is the composer. They must know how to compose, to control light and know the effect various lenses have on the final image. If these basics hasn’t been mastered the most expensive recording device is only going to capture a mediocre image. A musician must master his interment before they enter the recording studio. One can lean to play the piano and produce beautiful music even if that can’t afford a Steinway.

At what point do you find your equipment inadequate after a few years? We've all got GAS, but at some point you know you're just one-upping yourself?
My 2 EMs take just as good a photo as my old FM did with the same film- just nicer to carry.
My D3200 has the same sensor and most of the electrics as my D7100, and takes identical pictures. I has no lust for the D7500- the "improvements" don't impress me.
Like the guy with the D90, my D80 takes waay good enough pictures, especially for my 8x10s.
As does the A900. And my S8000. The tool for the job, and the circumstance.
Let there be an obvious reason why *this* one works, and *that* one doesn't.
Your camera is good enough for almost anything anyone can think of. Get good glass that does what *you* want. Somebody else said his 5 worst lenses- are the ones he never uses. They cost a bunch of money and they take up a bunch of shelf space. Learn from *our* mistakes.

More true than I want to explain. I expelled "GAS", my new to me D7200 came yesterday. I charged the battery and took a picture to see what the SC showed. I was feeling bad because a HHH member was selling a D7200 with a SC of 6500 actuations (low SC per the life of a shutter of 200,000). My picture count came back at 2584. It seems that KEH's rating of Excellent+ is spot on! Looks like it just came out of the box. MY HAPPY!!!

Can I hijack this for just a sec? I've been shooting local bike and ski races with my D3100 for awhile now and just got a refurbished D500. I'm finding the D3100 with the 35mm 1.8 Dx lens is great for getting people shots and the D500 with the telephoto is great for the action. Carrying around two cameras makes me look "pro" so there's that ;)

My question is...what telephoto for the D500? I'm using the kit telephoto that came on the D3100 now, a 55-200 non-VR Dx lens. I want VR and I'd like a bit more reach. Also...I like the bokeh. Oh yeah, and I don't want to spend 5 grand LOL.

Nikkor, Tamron, and Sigma all make a full frame 70-200 f/2.8, would something like that be the way to go? Or stick with a DX lens like the 70-300? Or something else? Carrying around a full frame lens and only using 66% of it seems a little weird...but the prices on those aren't too bad, especially used, and the f/2.8 would be sweet.

Let's call the budget, I don't know, about a thousand? But I don't "need" to spend a lot, I'm really loving the 35mm f1.8 and that was around $120 used.

For reference, here's what I'm doing... https://www.flickr.com/gp/56006470@N07/D43Y85

Thanks guys!!!

If you want an excellent cheap lens, the Nikkor 55-300mm is a great lens for the price...less than $300 here in Oz...it might be a "kit" lens (hate that name) but anyone on this site, that owns one, will tell you just how good it is...I've bought and sold some excellent lenses but this is one I'll never get rid of...

I think it's got the range I want and the price is pretty much unbeatable....I think I'll give it a shot, thanks!

I think the 7200 is a great camera you will love. The sigma is a very good lens you should get very good results with.

I wouldn't blow off your D3400 as being an inferior camera. It is capable of taking excellent photos, but like any camera, it's only as good as the person using it.

And I suspect has same sensor as D7200.

Those who disparage D3400 know not of what they speak. Many professionals consider it the most cost effective Nikon camera for excellent photos.

I found the AF-P 70-300 to give much better image quality. I bought a grey market one for under $200 but a while ago Nikon had refurb VR ones for that. Be sure to get the VR version for DX.

I asked about a telephoto lens for Nikon d3400 and seemed like a lot of folks told me not to waste my time. Recommendations were to buy a different camera body but that cost a lot of money and money is tight. What does everyone think about the Nikon 7200? And sigma 150-600

Very often some people on this forum have the habit of not being able to stay on point. They seem to want to impose their values on you rather help you with your question.

LOL - you seem to refuse to learn about this site, like how to find Active Topics. It only takes a moment to list the entire history of all the posts from every member, particularly when you know of a member's comments to a Canon photographer that demonstrate a bit of hypocrisy ...
