I have Liberty Mutual. So far, no claims and no losses or thefts. I'm lucky but very careful.

Question. How do you insure your camera gear and computers? As a rider on your homeowners policy or as an entirely separate policy? How do you identify your individual items. With photographs and serial numbers or.....? Thanks in advance.

Call your homeowners insurance agent. Get 100%- zero deductible - loss, damage, theft. You'll be happier and stuff does happen.

Some homeowners' policies include your gear as long as it's included in your statement of value. Check with your insurer.
Some people prefer to have a separate policy or rider.

Gene,
I don't mean to step on the good advice that you have shared above, however, there is a thing called the C.L.U.E. Report that a lot of insurance companies use to "share" your claim history with each other and use to set their rates for individuals. It is quite interesting reading below from Clark Howard. The following is about roadside assistance however it loosely applies to all types of insurance/riders, etc.:

Start Clark Howard Quote:
"The hidden dark side of roadside assistance
Auto insurers are great about offering add-ons to your policy that seem in theory like great conveniences at a great price. But using these seemingly benign “benefits” could marginalize you in the insurance marketplace and result in jacked-up rates!
Some auto insurers that offer roadside assistance treat your use of it as an at-fault claim and put that through on your C.L.U.E. report — even though you only needed a tow or the fix or a flat tire!
“It’s the Wild West with no rules on what insurers can decide to report on your C.L.U.E. report,” money expert Clark Howard says. “And you have no right of appeal either.”
So here’s the # 1 rule about roadside assistance: Never get it from your own insurer. Get it from AAA or elsewhere." End Clark Howard Quote

Gene, br I don't mean to step on the good advice t... (show quote)

That's really good to know! I'd say that people who advocate for using homeowner's policies believe they are probably C.L.U.E.-less. Or probably don't have a clue about C.L.U.E.

Please don't be facetious. This is a learning forum. Perhaps others will increase their policy to better protect themselves. I thought I was covered but now I will closer at my policy. Thanks for the edumacation! LOL

If you are looking for insurance values, the insurance companies use KEH to determine real value as replacement cost.

If you have USAA as your carrier they are the best insurance company hands down.

The numbers on camera gear are a joke. You need to mark the inside of the body and lens using your social security number because the police can track and recognize that number to try to return your gear.

Now, the exception to the above rule. ANYTHING from E. Leitz (Leica). Leitz hold the history of each and every item they manufacture. You must register the ownership of any item with E. Leitz, once registered it is your forever. Only a notarized bill of sales will over ride this. If any item is stolen and is found/recovered it will be returned to the listed owner regardless of time frame.

All items stolen follow this general rule, east coast goes to the mid western states, mid western states go to the west coast and west coast items are shipped to the east coast for disposal. Top plate and engraved lens numbers are useless as whole shipments of these numbers are made, not traced and are often high jacked as entire shipments. So engrave your lenses and body and other parts with your Social Security number so the police can return the stolen items if recovered.

I have my homeowners with Erie and all my camera equipment is separately listed and insured for all risks (no deductible) for 1% per year. Covers loss, theft, accidental damage, etc.

Erie insurance was great when I lived in Tennessee. They covered my equipment too.

Having moved to Michigan I found out they don't cover here so another company was called on.

Not all police depts. use this function, NYC is now in discussions for this item. Even if you just get the marking pen, something is better than nothing.

Great place is your homeowners insurance. I schedule mine for full current value, $0 deductible. Furnish to the insurance co receipts and serial numbers as evidence of value when insuring. Open peril coverage covers just about everything except wear and tear.

At one time I had a membership to the PPA, and one reason I joined was the insurance coverage they provided. Their insurance coverage is provided by a third party insurance company. I submitted a claim, the claim was denied in less than five minutes. There are specific companies that provide tailored coverage for photo equipment, one provider that I see mentioned is Hisock Insurance.

I pay $259 for $19000.00 coverage. I have used this policy twice and it has paid for itself for years already. Just called and told them what and how it happened and bingo, check inn the mail ASAP. Maybe it took around a week and a half, fast enough for me.

StateFarm PAP works for me.... I live in Brooklyn, NY.
