This sort of goes along the lines of your query, I have a small box full of Minolta maxxum lenses that I use on Sony cameras giving me full auto functionality with stabilization. The lenses can often be bought for a song and I am very happy with much of the results.

Amen to that! I use a whole lot of great Minolta glass on a Sony A7S and A7R II with both LA-EA4&2 adapters. Fast autofocus, aperture control, full stabilization, good image quality, etc. AND fabulous prices!!

In reading about the rowing number of new mirrorless cameras there seems to be a move by some mfgrs to "in-camera-IS." If this is the case is there likely and positive (really negative) impact on lens cost that no longer have IS systems included? Has anyone seen and discussion to this?

It is really nice having image stabilization on any lens you attach to an "in-camera-IS", be it an ol' manual lens or the latest and greatest new one!

However, I doubt is has much impact lens prices, sadly.

Besides, it's a fun challenge.
I'm interested in taking good photos, not in surmounting challenges, so I am grateful for whatever help the camera can provide.

Unless you can take a tripod with you, if your hands shake like mine do, IBIS is the best way to go, in my humble opinion.

ILIS & IBIS is the answer for these situations, or, a hands off approach.... and really, how much fun does that sound? I'm going to guess here, but I would say that there are many improvements with digital that might serve one person better than another, depending on the circumstance. Do what you like, like what you do!!!!

In a few instances you can buy the same identical
lens with and without in-lens IS, and the difference
in price is modest, such as $650 vs $725. Doesn't
require discussion. The prices are publicly posted.

Sometimes there's NO difference with and without
optical IS. I just looked up a Sigma 17-50/2.8 that
is sold with various mounts, all for $370. Optical IS
is included for cameras lacking IBIS, and is deleted
for cameras that provide IS. Same price for all :-)

Same rule applies to Tamron lenses for Sony A mount cameras which have no in-lens stabilization, since that function is in the Sony camera bodies -- same price as the Canon and Nikon versions which do have in-lens stabilization.

I rationalize it by thinking that since the internal mechanism for the Sony version is less complicated, it's a bit safer to buy gray market or used lenses, since there is less to go wrong.
