What's an
img file?
You're not confusing the HTML IMG tag with an image file format are you?
Are you certain? Websites use IMG "tags" to bind images for display. An HTML image tag looks something like this:
<img src="myimage.jpg" alt="Flowers in Garden">
There are, of course, multiple options, such as sizing, alignment, etc. This code lets browsers understand what it is they are to display.
In online forums such as UHH, the use of BBCode makes the magic happen (e.g., [img]
https://somesite.com/image.jpg[img] (ending slash omitted to allow for display).
The only other time I've seen IMG used is as a disk image (one of Apple's formats).

Why do you want to post your pictures as .img files? Your best result for web posting will be from posting them as high quality .jpgs

Wikipedia (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMG_(file_format)) says:
"
This article is about a raw disk image file format with .img filename extension. For Apple Inc.'s disk images using the .img filename extension, see Apple Disk Image."
The reference to "Apple Disk Image" is
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Disk_ImageIt is not an image file as we know it. It's a Disk Image, which is kind of a data dump from a disk.

Most people who sell images online use .jpg format as far as I can tell.
I have hundreds of images in Lightroom that contain "img" as a prefix to the file name.
Examples:
IMG_0528.jpg (Canon Powershot SX50is - default numbering system)
IMG-44.Tif (Canon Powershot SX50is - default numbering system)
img041.tif (Epson Impressions Scanner - default numbering system)
Photos going through my WhatsApp also seem to collect the img prefix together with a WA number all followed by the file type (jpg, tiff, psd etc.)
img as a file name suffix is something to do with files contain raw images or parts of raw images, audio, and other documentation and used to be widely used in connection with Compact Discs (CD's). This info I gleaned from Wikipedia.

I am sorry what sales site is requiring the img file?
The term img file does not refer to any specific file format.
“An IMG file is a disc image file created by various disc imaging applications, such as HH Software Virtual CD. It stores an exact copy of the data on a CD or DVD and is used for backups and burning new discs. IMG files created by different disc imaging programs may use different formats.”

If you give us more details we may be able to help you.
Is a website you want to use asking you for an img file? What website are you looking at? Is it possible that the website is just referring to an image file and using img as an abbreviation? Generally if someone wants a specific format, the file extension is specified with a period in front of it, e.g. ".jpg".
As others have noted, img is used as a prefix to some images (my iPhone does that for example but calls them .jpeg files [same as .jpg]). But .jpg is a very widely used format (almost universal) and generally accepted by all websites I have come across.

Dirtfarmer is exactly right and he has identified why it is difficult to answer your question.
The phrase "img file" means many different things. It is like asking "I need a car how can I get one"?
Please provide more details so people here can help.
