Just FYI, these are Yosemite with a Sigma 8-16mm lens, 12-24mm FF equivalent, mostly at full wide. It does give some added possibilities if you like that sort of thing

Yes, Yosemite requires a wide angle. 👍

Nice images, Toby. An awful lot of people don't know how to shoot a wide angle. You, obviously, do.

I agree on both counts. Great work, Toby. I also agree that using an ultra-wide lens requires a lot of skill. I know because I am still struggling myself. Toby's images serve as a tutorial.

Okay, not sure if I really accidentally posted before I meant to, or was just looking at my preview, didn't see the part that said preview, and deleted most what I had written, so going to send an abbreviated version of what I had written, so here goes.

Hi Ruby,
Welcome to UHH! I am fairly new to UHH myself, and also to the hobby of photography,(just got my first DSLR camera, a Canon Rebel SL2 in January, which came with an 18-55 mm lens) and am on a learning curve with my new camera, so cannot really advise you regarding lenses. However, in case this is your first time going to Yosemite, I wanted to let you know about a hotel I love staying at in the area. The Yosemite Gateway Inn, Best Western Plus in Oakhurst, about 15 miles from the south entrance to Yosemite, is awesome! Check out their amenities on bestwestern.com! Besides the indoor pool and jacuzzi, and the fact each room is equipped with a refrigerator and microwave, each room has a different, beautifully hand painted large wall mural of Yosemite! The customer service is awesome, and their prices are very reasonable for all the room and hotel amenities you get. My single queen bed room is $80.99/night for March 19th-21st. I may have gotten the last of the single queen rooms though, as I noticed online tonight, the first rooms mentioned for that timeframe are the double queen rooms, which is what I have stayed in before.

Also wanted to highly recommend the "Discover Yosemite" day tour(at discoveryosemite.com) and the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine(historical)Railroad excursion,(at yosemitemountainsugarpinerailroad.com). I just went on that site though, and it takes you to a different site to buy tickets, which I could not get to work, so if you want to do that, may want to go on the site, and call the phone number. If you do buy tickets for this, be sure to dress warmly, as all cars are open air, some more open than others.

Am 95% sure I am going. Not sure if you are renting a car, however, if our trip dates overlap, you are staying in Oakhurst, and (and you feel comfortable doing so) and there is anything I can help with while you are there, please feel free to let me know in a reply to this post, and I can private message you my email and/or cell phone number. I just added my photo to my profile, so hopefully I did it correctly, and it shows up with my reply, so you can at least see what I look like LOL.

At any rate, enjoy your trip! It is a beautiful place to visit!
Take care,

PhotoNat

Are you just going to copy what everyone else photographs there, or do you think for yourself and choose your own subjects and views? If the former, buy postcards - if the latter, you know what to take.

Like the above poster, I live many miles away from Yosemite. I agree with Leitz's comments. Think for yourself, and you could have 'individual' results in your collection of images. I have never been to the USA. Have seen many images of the 'Tourist' areas. Majority are 'Rubber-Stamp' shots, and quickly become predictable, especially when the shooters have asked for advice from others. Notice that I referred to them as 'Shooters', not 'Photographers'. I learned most of my photography at grass-roots level, by going out, and doing it, back in the 1940's/50's. Much easier these days with digital instant play-back cameras.

Pablo,
Yes, you definitely learned by doing. Not nearly so easy in those days. Thank you. Your post cemented my resolve to look at the scenery from more different angles when I go. I am already asking myself, "what can I do differently this time?" How can I put a different spin on that view(angles, lighting, etc).

Good for you....Go for it.....Much more rewarding than 'following the herd'. (Like sheep... or is it Lemmings?).

Sage advice. Go wider than 28mm’s.

These were taken with a 45mm.

If you simply shoot pano, you can avoid the need for very wide lenses. Unless you like that "Ultra-wide angle look" where a foreground element is represented "bigger than life" and completes with a background element because they are both sharp and your attention is drawn to both. I personally do not care for that "look." It's not how I see, and not what I like to see in an image.
