My question: am I correct that there is no remote shutter capability on the Nikon D800, just cable?
The D800 uses the MC-30 remote, there is no WIRELESS remote capability on it without the proper adapter.

I use Nikon's ML-30 Modulite Remote Control set. I was quite dissapointed to find Nikon had not built a wireless remote as some of the other bodies have
I've never observed MT in error but...
I use the Vello Freewire as a remote for very long distances on my D800e as well as M D7000.
I think I got it from B & H.

It's called the Vello Freewave and it works with the D800.

The Vello adapts an RF transmitter to the D800's 10 pin connection, same connection as the MC-30 uses. The fact still remains, the D800 does not have wireless capability in the body, nor doe the D4 or any of the D3's. Nikons ML-L3 wireless remote , nor any other wireless remote, will not work directly on the D800 as it has no receptor on the body. Nikon makes the ML-3 which works the same way as the Vello, but it utilizes an LED beam and is limited to 26 feet of range. For longer the RF adapters work wel, and there are several aftermarket units availablel.
I stand by my earlier statement.
