And that was to accommodate the new space highway.
Lets ask a highway engineer for the answer.

OR you could look at it this way... Multiplication still trumps addition and subtraction.
3+3(3-3+2) same thing just written differently. 12 is still the answer.

Can’t believe I’m still following this but where did the 2 come from?

Last thing I remember being taught was to use parentheses if you want to make it clear what you are doing. This is even more important in programing if you want correct answers. I tested it on 3 calculators and 2 of them said 18, one said 12.
I may have learned the proper order in elementary school arithmetic, but that has been long forgotten and over ruled by basic algebra and computer programing. I've also forgotten lots of that, and still cut my boards too short.
The solution is to use parentheses, and, when possible, always cut the longest boards first.

So what?? You do computer programming and STILL got it wrong?
EVERY programming language I've ever used (BASIC, Fortran, C, C++, Clipper, Java, C#) ALL do the arithmetic operations in the correct order.

I'm 82. No, they have not changed.

🤪and I’m still watching it🤪
You are a bit late and sorry to tell you that 18 is not correct. Try again.
Mark.
I showed this to my grandkids, 11 and 9, and they got it right so I guess at least their school is teaching it correctly.
Math can be confusing, and I had to look this up before I posted what I thought was the correct answer.
As some of you said, there are no parentheses. PEMDAS says to work with the parentheses first. Since there are none, we ignore that part of it, just as we ignore the exponents. That brings us to multiplication, and that is the first thing we do. Working through it, we wind up with "B. 12" as the answer.

Now that everyone has got OP’s problem under control, try this one.
A gentleman who recently died left the sum of £8,000 to be divided among his widow, five sons, and four daughters. He directed that every son should receive three times as much as a daughter, and that every daughter should have twice as much as their mother. What was the widow's share?”
Widow should get around 205.12 give or take.... AM I in the ballpark /
