I have a smaller Lowepro Mini Treker backpack that can be loaded to a point I deemed too heavy. So my logic was to get the larger Lowepro Rolling backpack x450 AW. It's definitely bigger, holds a lot more gear, and it's got wheels so it does save my back. Here's the caveat. Unlike the smaller backpack, which can be considered my "smaller" item for carry on for airline travel, the larger Lowpro x450 AW can not be considered the "smaller" item for airline carry on. On my first trip with the bag, I did not realize this and got to the gate and was called out on it, but was luckily able to pass because I was in first class (with elite status). The morale of the story is that any bag is always capable of holding more gear and weight than my body really wanted to carry. Next time, I would get a smaller rolling backpacking bag so as to possibly qualify as the "smaller" carry on bag. Now that I have the bigger rolling backpack bag, it just now the "larger" rolling carry on bag.

I am in need of a camera bag with wheels for traveling. My back pack gets too heavy running through airports and hauling in and out of motels. The size would have to comply with carry-on bags for flights. I have looked at local camera stores and they don't seem to carry them. I am looking on line, and it is hard to tell what they are really like. Are these a rare item? Thank you for any input or suggestions.

Try looking at this Tutto site. It is an Italian manufacturer, and makes many sizes - very well designed and sturdy and can be configured many different ways. They make the dog carrier I use. https://www.tuttocases.com/

Definitely not a "carry on"!

Luckily I can use the back of my SUV for my gear!

Once you find one that fits the gear you have to carry, be sure to check out pre-owned bags on B&H and other sites. You can also go to eBay, I got a Think Tank Airport International v.2 for less than half the price new. Love it! Just be careful - I've seen some selling bags at OVER the retail price...

Thiak Tank is the Best!!! I've traveled with mine quie a bit and never a single problem. Also, you can pull the dividers out and it becomes a bulletproof suitcase.

If you absolutely need to check your camera gear for trave, I’d suggest Pelican for sure and be careful to watch out for loss and use a hidden GPS tracking device. I do not like checking any camera gear on airplanes. Also beware of the smaller carry on restrictions (size and weight) for smaller jets and European carriers. Note Hawaiian airlines has a 25 lbs limit per item for all carry on.

Take a look at Porter Case. They make an excellent case for cameras and luggage carriing. They are pricey however quality and service is excellent. Wife and I have used them for decades, they have provided exceptional service.

I bought a 22 in top-opening, wheeled carry-on ( it is $90 here, but was only $50 from TJMaxx ):

and bought an insert( from B&H ) that happened to fit exactly:

for $120 I have a custom camera case, with pouches on the outside for papers, laptop, etc.

Nice rig. Good price.

Pelican makes very nice cases. Solid plastic so you can’t squeeze a corner to try and fit in an overhead bin if things are tight. Also, as has been stated here more than once, these cases scream “expensive stuff inside,” so you need to keep a close eye on them. Having said all this, I love my case. Carries everything I need for those rare times I do a wedding.

had one; gave it to my son-in-law; it was all i could do to lift it up into the airplane's overhead compartment
