One of my favorite photos was taken from the cab of 611 of 1218's cab area.
Whenever I see 611, I always kick myself for not having camera in hand when it roared from Atlanta going northeast. I was sitting under a bridge when it came through, I could have had a shot looking into the cab with the fire doors wide open and making the people inside the cab glow. Never had a repeat of conditions to make that kind of capture. But I do have the image in my mind.
I can see the 611 racing the 1218.
Thanks for the comment.

Yes, indeed. We have been stopping in every so often on our trip up to NJ and back home South. We use I-81 as the main route.

If possible, stay overnight in the Hotel Roanoke. Lot’s of RR history. N&W owned the hotel and their offices were directly across the street in the two buildings connected by a pedestrian enclosed walkway on around the 3rd-4th floor. Now the hotel and the former offices belong to Virginia Tech- at least the last I heard. The hotel is now in the Hilton chain and has been completely revamped. The N&W main tracks separate Hotel Roanoke from downtown and the RR museum, but there is a really nice pedestrian enclosed walkway over the tracks from the hotel.
Yes, I’m a retired former Southern Railway officer and spent a lot of time in Roanoke when we merged in 1982. Now in Norfolk and retired from NS here.

Sir, I just had to "stop in" and say hello. Back in the 60's and 70's I favored a couple of lines. Two of which were the Southern and the N&W. I thought the merger was (from a fan standpoint at least) was great.

I grew up in Martinsville and the 611 came through there frequently. It has to be the most beautiful steam locomotive ever built. I went to tech and rode a N & W train from Blacksburg to one of our football games as a cadet in 1959. I never will forget that trip. I don't think 611 was the loco however.
