OK, so I am one of those novice types that knows just enough to be a little bit dangerous...
Today, because of continued issues with focus, I decided to clear all custom settings on my Canon 7D Mark 2. About a month ago I had been experimenting with focus settings and must have buggered something up that affected my images....especially those taken at a distance.
Restoring to the default settings does appear to have fixed the problem, but I am confused as to why my previously configured back button focus continued to work.
Shouldn't clearing the camera’s settings also have restored the focus back to the shutter button? I like back button focus and was pleased that I didn’t have to reconfigure it after clearing the camera settings....but wondering how that came about.
Anyone?

The Camera Reset is NOT a universal reset of the entire camera, it is a "general" reset and many settings will not be affected.
Exactly what gets reset varies widely by camera brand and model. Generally the lower end cameras have a greater number of items that are reset than semi-pro or Pro level cameras.

Thanks...is there a way to learn which ones are, or are not, affected?

The camera manual would be one place to investigate this question.

When I get home that is the first thing I will check.

I download PDF copies from the Canon site and have at home as well as my laptop.
deleted due to redundancy

The digital PDF manual that comes on the disks with the camera or that can be downloaded from Canon is more comprehensive then the paper manual.

I also keep all of mine in .pdf on my phone in a folder named.... ahh, Manuals. I don't always have access to my computer, tablet, or the paper manuals, especially in the field, but my phone is ALWAYS on me. Something also to re-read on flights during travel, etc.
See page 445 of your manual.
You can also call Canon Tech. Svs. and they can talk you thru it.
Got it!
Custom Controls are not affected by restoring camera’s default settings.
Thanks!

Some manufacturers offer two different resets. Sony for example has "reset" and "initialize". The first acts much like your experience (some things left alone) and the latter resets the camera back to how it was from the factory erasing dates, times, and, I think, firmware updates not on the card. When mine gets all screwed up I use initialize then manually restore what I want.
