Arizona's Salt River Wild Horses

A short drive out of the Phoenix area on the Bush Highway will bring you to the desert areas that lie along the Salt River. This area is known for its large herd of wild horses and it's possible to get out and hike among these beautiful animals. The winter months around here have been cooler and wetter than normal and although this isn't what the tourists want, it's exactly what the horses need following the years of drought that we've been experiencing.

I hike the desert scrublands with my Canon EOS M3 combined with a 75-300 mm zoom which allows me to get good close-ups while keeping a safe distance from the horses but it's still amazing how close they will allow you to approach before they move out of range. The photos posted are usually zoomed to max and cropped for aesthetic presentations.

Jack, these are really wonderful, almost portrait-like, photographs. Very nicely done.

Great capture of the beautiful wild horses, Jack. Including the cactus in the background was a nice idea. Thanks for sharing these images.

Thanks for the reply Annie, I tried to get the horses to pose in front of a Giant Saguaro but they're kinda shy and wouldn't cooperate so I had to take multiple photos and combine them. Glad you liked the final images.

Thanks for the reply kenievans, these horses have been roaming the desert for several decades. The last several years have been tough on them due to the lack of rain and often they're hit by cars. Getting the photos was the easy part.
