You can still get duck tape , "duck" is a brand name for a linen bound gaffers tape, not to be confused with the regular duct tape. In the original series Magyver, Angus Magyver used "Duck" tape.

Wow - - I don't think many people know that MacGyver's first name is/was Angus !!!

You can look up individual words in Oxford without a subscription...

Just put "oxford dictionary snafu" (or another word) in your search bar.

Thanks, I didn't get that far into it when I Googled it.

Who's nicknames are those ???

For example, was the person "Lloyd" either German or Dutch ???

I don't understand "Lups" - - Charles who ???

Those are my uncles' names and were both German. Their middle names were Lloyd Frederick and Charles Peter. Long ago, I had asked my mother how her brothers' got such names and she said that is just what everyone called them.

They call him that at least once an episode on Friday nights.

Look at this for uses of "Duck" brand tape: http://stuckatprom.com/

The original tape in WW II was made from the cotton canvas fabric called "duck cloth" and the heat resistant types (long lasting ones are metallic) made after the war led to the name "duct" tape.

We had a family friend who was called Dutchie because he was German.

Deutsch was "Americanized" to what sounded like "Dutch". Actually the "Pennsylvania Dutch" were not "Dutch", they were German - - and should have more properly been called the Pennsylvania Deutsch.

My beloved great-uncle was called Uncle Bum; my dad just called him Bum. When I got older and understood what a bum was, I questioned the derivation.

When my uncle and his wife had their first son, Uncle Bum (whose name was Charlie), holding the baby, twiggled his chin and said, "Oh you're just a little bum..."

My Uncle Charlie, who was named after my great uncle, said, "Well, if he's a little bum, you must be Uncle Bum !!!

For my part, at a young age, I was just lucky and happy that I didn't have 2 Uncle Charlies.

You must be talking about the NEW MacGyver; I've never seen it - - I was referring to the OLD MacGyver with Richard Dean Anderson.

If I'm not mistaken, from what I recall, Mac's first name was never revealed until nearly the end, or possibly the last episode - - so it was not commonly known in the original series.

Yes it was the last season, in two episodes. I got that from research. When it was out I watched a couple of episodes and didn't like it. Partly because of their preachy attitude and a bunch of factual mistakes I saw.
The new one, I am retired and just looking for entertainment. Also he has a body guard who uses a gun so that covers the situations where he would have never lived long enough to pull off his near miracles without a gun to defend himself. The new one does seem to have a poor sense of time - they have him do things way too fast.

I'm betting that a many viewers knew much less about technology back then, when the original was filmed - - OR - - maybe there was a different group of retired folks just looking for entertainment...

Nowadays, I guess production costs too much if they take too long to get to the point.
