Awesome, Larry!!! I am so envious of your lightning bolt! you may have only captured 3 images but this one is a WOW. So many discharges from the main bolt. Extraordinary capture!

When shooting lightening it is all luck. You just have to take lots of exposures and hope the flashes are in the right place. All it takes is one good o ne to make the day. I'm really happy with this one. I always appreciate your comments.

A couple of weeks ago we had a light show over the Everglades as a storm rolled in. This time I was in almost the right place.

This is a 30 second exposure when one hope there will be a lightening strike when the shutter is open.
This time Fate was smiling on me :-)

Thanks for looking.

Your patience certainly paid off, and Mother Nature was definitely doing her thing! Great catch. How exactly do you meter the scene for a 30 second exposure? I would love to catch one of these some day!

Metering is easy. You start with manual mode. Now I have only three things to adjust--shutter speed, ISO and aperture. Since I knew I wanted a 30 second shutter speed I set that first. I set my ISO to 64, the lowest setting my camera allows. Then I adjust the aperture (raise to higher number) until the in camera meter reaches the correct exposure. If I can't reach the correct exposure by that method, then I add an ND filter to the lens and then readjust the aperture until it reaches the correct exposure.
