Your patience certainly paid off, and Mother Nature was definitely doing her thing! Great catch. How exactly do you meter the scene for a 30 second exposure? I would love to catch one of these some day!
Metering is easy. You start with manual mode. Now I have only three things to adjust--shutter speed, ISO and aperture. Since I knew I wanted a 30 second shutter speed I set that first. I set my ISO to 64, the lowest setting my camera allows. Then I adjust the aperture (raise to higher number) until the in camera meter reaches the correct exposure. If I can't reach the correct exposure by that method, then I add an ND filter to the lens and then readjust the aperture until it reaches the correct exposure.
