Which 500mm lens is best with a Canon Rebel T3i camera---a mirrored lens or a longer mirrorless lens? Please share opinions and/or idea. Thank you.

I'm surprised no one so far has mentioned the Asahi Pentax 500mm f4.5? I've got one and keep finding them going in the range of $350 to $700 US dollars.

It's not the lightest at near 8 pounds and is totally manual but that is what I find the most fun.

Being an M42 screw on mount, you'd also have to get an adapter for your camera.

For a near 50 year old lens, you'd find it as wonderful as I do!

500mm for your Rebel T3i? The same 500mm that applies to all Canon EOS bodies: EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM, a $9000, 7 lb monster that works best with a tripod and gimbal for a stable platform, or at least a monopod, although can be hand-held if you have the arms for it.

For more economical lenses, have a look at used and / or older, discontinued models.

I agree. I have an EF500 f/4L IS USM. It’s a monster of a lens but it’s only second best to the Mark II and the new 600mm lenses. But for the money I think the new 100-400 Canon lens is the best especially for someone just starting out with their first long lens.

Got a chance to try out a mirrorless TOU/FIVESTAR 500mm F8 yesterday and took some decent pictures both handheld and with a tripod of waterfowl in lowlight conditions (cloud cover) from about 30 feet to 300 yards.

Posted some of the 500mm F8 set at F11 pictures hand held in photography section. May not be the best but for a first use with this type of lens I may get one for myself. I also need a good tripod to hold longer lenses.
