I have just unearthed a treasure trove of family slides dating back to the late 1940’s. They are in good shape and I want to convert these to digital so I can put them on thumb drives for my siblings. This will be a huge undertaking but I have the time. Need sugggestions from UHHers how to go about this.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Do a search here on UHH. This has been explained many times. There’s plenty of information on scanning AND copying with a digital camera, the two main methods.
At the top of the page, hit Search and enter ‘Scanning and copying slides’.
Interesting how a particular topic will come up several times across a week or two then not show up for months. I usually respond to this particular type of post because its something I do all the time with B&W and color negatives as well as slides and prints. burkphoto has got it right, do the search. In the mean time know it's not hard if you have the right scanner and you can get excellent results after playing with it a bit with film. Prints can be a bit iffy.
