I am not a fan of this picture but I do like the innovative way ESWO presented the before and after. That should be the new standard. Thanks for posting.

abc, you are welcome for the post. My cheater method for doing this if anyone is curious:
create a collage in Picasa 3, choose the "picture pile" style, resize your images and bring the smaller one to the front of the pile. I also set it to a custom saved D size (24x36). I will be so sad when I can no longer use Picasa, it does so many wonderful things easily and on the fly. It is my go to for viewing images on my drive, etc. I should probably start looking for a replacement before the time comes I need one and begin the learning process...

Thanks for sharing this with everyone. When Leica and 35 mm came to this country in the 1920's, photographers did a similar thing. They would place a contact print in the corner of the enlargement to show how much work they had to do. I have such a print. The contact print was 1"x1.5" in the corner of a 16x20 enlargement. That was quite an achievement 90 years ago.

As for Picassa, I am sure you will find a replacement. I do not know your needs or interests but I like Adobe. They are really the king of the mountain. Elements is the logical next step but I do not know if you can make composites in it. If you are really serious about photography, then LR and PS are the ultimate tools. Yes, you need a lot of time and commitment to learn them but for many of us, those investments are well worth it. And you know that Adobe will be around forever.

PS Elements "expert" mode uses layers, so all things are possible

However, I'm thinking our OP uses Picasa simply for inserting the little thumbnail, and something much more powerful for doing textures, overlays, masking and composite work. Diane, what's your go-to software for creative enterprises? I saw CS5 in the exif of one of yours and PS CC in another.

It was mine, as well. Then I was told about FastStone Image Viewer:

Think you’ve made a very nice job of this - good choice of images to composite, nicely complimentary, nice colour blending, selection and masking. All looks good. There seems to be some slight difference in the girl between the two images, around the head and shoulders area? Not that it matters a jot. Well done. Maybe it’s time to take the plunge into Photoshop, I’m sure you won’t look back!

Thanks for the tip Linda. I am familiar with it and will look at it again.

In ref to the previous comments:

Oh yes, I am a photoshop girl all the way, CC, and I also use lightroom a bit too. I started in Picasa when I ventured into photography, it was my first and has been with me all along my journey. I love its simplistic and straightforward features. I use it a lot for collages and such...it does the contact sheet in collage with the option of plain white background or image as I have exampled. It is also where I first experimented with blending photos in the multiple exposure collage. At the end of a day's photo excursion I would throw all my photos into a multiple exposure collage and it would result in some lovely texturey bokeh abstract that was a secret that only I knew all the images that it contained. It was my doorway to editing and I had a lot of fun learning with it. And you can add text quickly too.

There were several variations of the shot and I was not exactly sure which I had chosen at the time of the edit and in my haste I grabbed one that represented "well enough" just to give the gist of it. You have a keen eye to catch it. Thank you for your kind words. PS. Yes I could not live without photoshop that statement was more of a reference to photo management software.

I am not sure what you mean by photo management but by my definition, you probably cannot beat LR. Those keywords no one likes taking the time to use are great for finding pictures in a second or two.

Yes, that is where I am at. A complete organization of no telling how many photos as I have been frantic searching for pictures. I used to be so good with naming and organizing my photos but then I started shooting a lot more and life got crazy, the rest is lost history. Mostly viewing, finding, organizing...but I love that in Picasa I can also do those quick edit things. I just havent learned how in another program but I know I should start weaning off of Picasa.
