I would like to know what advantage/disadvantage lens hoods have.
Where it should be used or when it should not be used.

Thank you for your input on this subject.

I always use mine, it helps with any glare from either sun/lighting unless I artisically want some glare.

mine never come off the 24-70mm2.8 L and the sigma 70-200mm2.8 OS.

1.reduces glare
2. protects the lens
3. looks cool.
4. hahahahaha (pass on #3)

On my 18-55 lens, wide open, the lens hood, when I even use it, produces a significant vignette (although I thought it looked cool on one of my shots - below). I really need to get a tulip-shaped hood or at least one that's not as long.

I shoot events and always use lens hoods. They protect the first element of my lens from getting scratched or banged into. I don't like to use a UV filter for protection as that adds another glass element which can also contribute to lens flare. A hood cuts down on lens flare.

Two years ago I was changing my 24-70mm f/2.8 to a 70-200mm f/2.8 at a concert. Someone bumped me and the 24-70 slipped out of my hand and fell to a concrete floor landing on the hood. The hood took the impact and was so jammed onto the lens that I had to cut it off but the lens was otherwise undamaged. I keep the cut lens hood on my desk as a reminder to be less stupid and more careful. That hood saved me $$$$ in lens repair.

The only time I use a lens hood is when I'm taking photos.

i have had lens hoods with all my lens...i have never seen vignetting like that from any hood unless you are using an on camera flash.

i just tried my 18-55 kit lens with a lens hood on my older t1i ...i cannot make it get the vignetting effect.

There are several hoods.. use the wrong hood you get vignette or a little bit of flare.
