When parts need to be ordered from suppliers, it can be very difficult for a repair service to
give an accurate time estimate Sometimes "In stock" at a parts house turns out to mean
"Can be ordered from distributor".

Sickouts are another thing that can make schedules slip. They can't just call Kelly Services
for a temp, and it's not a good idea to hand off work in progress to another tech.

My advice with any repair service: tell them you're not in a hurry and they can take
as long as they need. Hopefully they won't even start working on your camera until they
aren't too busy. The last thing you want on any repair work is a rush job

Also, if you hae three cameras you want worked on, let them know that, but send them in
one at at time, and don't send the second one until you pay for the first one and get it back.
That limits your exposure to risk.

There is a "mechanic's lein" law in California (as in most states), and if you send them three
cameras, you've just sent them three "hostages" instead of one. Not that there is likely to
be a billing dispute, but you never know. Might as well limit your risk.

(I once held onto $150,000 worth of rack-mount equipment for a year until I was paid
for my work. My client was experiencing a cash flow problem at the time, and as an
independent contractor, I was at the bottom of the list of people to be paid. Holding the
equipment bumped me up a bit.)

When I send in anything for repair, I always enclose a signed and dated
cover letter including:
1. My name, phone number, and shipping address.
2. List of items enclosed (body, body cap, etc.) and serial numbers.
3. Description of the symptom -- if I'm having a problem fixed.
4. List of any other known problems or condition issues: scratches, dings, etc.
that I don't want fixed.
5. The amount of the estimate I was given, and whether or not it was a binding estimate.

A good repair service is a valuable resource, so it pays to build a relationship.
