Date Line: Robinson Crusoe Island, Chile. The largest of the Juan Fernandez Islands, the ruggedly mountainous Robins Crusoe Island lies 416 miles off the Chilean coast. The island known as Mas a Teirre or closer island, was a frequent stop where explorers and other marines replenished their ships. In 1704, one of them, the Scotsman Alexander Selkirk, became marooned here and lived off the land and the sea until his rescue in 1709. Daniel Defoe, inspired by the tale, wrote his best-known novel, after Chile named the island in 1966. Today, residents rely on the spiny lobster trade, enjoying a serene lifestyle, most of them in the village of San Bautista on Cumberland Bay. Day-43 out of 128 days around the world.
