Hello UHH, I am traveling Saturday and wondering what I should do to make it easier on myself to maneuver the security area. Also, should I take my SD card out...? any harm to my images ?
Airports are not fun, and I have to connect ....
Thanks for any advice...
Just open the camera bag. I did nothing else.
Make sure you take all your carry on bag bottles and lotions OUT and put them in a baggie they provide.
Have a nice trip.

Just cam back from Australia. Sent my camera in my knapsack with SD cards through scanners and no problem.

And any liquid container that is more than 3oz (capacity, not current contents) should be checked. If they find it they will take it away.
Camerawise, I'm still amazed that they don't even look inside my camera bag as it must look strange on an x-ray.
They have some pretty sophisticated technology nowdays.
Hi Michelle,
Airport scanners will not affect your memory card or camera. Don't worry.
There was a scare story a while ago about cosmic rays at high altitude having an effect on the camera's sensor and the suggestion that you should wrap it up in kitchen foil. As far as I know this is hokum and your gear is as safe as you are in the plane.
PS. Find out where they keep the black box, 'cos if that's all they expect to survive a crash. You want to be as close as you can get to it, Right?
In case someone does want to root through my bag, I consolidate all small items; cards, connectors, cords, etc. in a gallon clear zip lock bag; normally my small items are in different zip compartments. Security can see at a glance what is in the bag and nothing falls on floor or belt.
I carry a camera, underwater housing, strobes, cords and spare batteries through inspections throughout the world and have rarely had anything looked at despite what it must resemble in the scanner. My SD and CF cards have never had a problem either. I have a portable hard drive that everything is backed up on as well...you never know.

Arrive early and have a Starbucks (or whatever) when you get there. There are some wonderful shots (hear I'm speaking about photos) to be had at airports. Security isn't so much an issue when you're not rushed.
Great advice , thank you all.
no problem with the cards and camera. do not waste your money on a over priced bitter cup of coffie at starbucks
The only problem I've ever had was when TSA discovered my screw-on spike tips for my tripod in my carry on camera bag. I was taken aside and questioned by 2 different agents and finally had to screw one onto my tripod to show them. They did look a little like bullets. I just leave them at home now.

Check with your airline on rules for spare batteries. Many airlines consider Lithium rechargeable batteries to be "Dangerous Cargo" and either limit the number you can take or require them to be carried in 'carry-on' luggage. In any case make sure they are packaged so they cannot short out.
I kept my batteries in my camera (the only ones I had along so I could take photos) and the sd card in the camera and had no issues at all that way with them as I kept them out of my bag to take photos from the jets while traveling. Good Luck.
