From 2017 IRS figures:

"According to the latest IRS data, the payment of income taxes is as follows.

The top 1 percent of income earners, those having an adjusted annual gross income of $480,930 or higher, pay about 39 percent of federal income taxes. That means about 892,000 Americans are stuck with paying 39 percent of all federal taxes.

The top 10 percent of income earners, those having an adjusted gross income over $138,031, pay about 70.6 percent of federal income taxes.

About 1.7 million Americans, less than 1 percent of our population, pay 70.6 percent of federal income taxes.

Seems like a lot of us really aren't paying our fair share.

The rest of the story is to also include how much to total income that the 1% and 10% control. It is out of proportion to the tax amount paid.

A good example that my college statistics professor stressed. One statistic can tell the story you want, while two or more add a great deal of clarity to the story being told.

To bad the rich don't pay their fair share of Social Security. If they paid the same percentage, as the rest of us, on all their income. No deductions involved. Social Security would be solvent much longer.

"According to the latest IRS data" - and yet not one single link to that supposed IRS data... But considering the "source" is a radical right-wing site that is to be expected.

The top 1% also control about 39% of all the wealth in the US, so the taxes paid may not be out of line.

If it's so great there why are some many people leaving the state? How about that bud?

Did you read the post I was answering? NO I suggest you read it. the point is that California alone would have somethng like the 5th or 6th largest economy in the world and has probably the most developed infrastructure of any other state. all that costs money. oh forget it. just read the post that I answered.

I live in Southern California. You must be talking of a totally different California than where I live. My Califoria wastes money like shit through a goose, spending millions to billions on wasteful projects such as taking in as many illegal aliens as possible and providing them with food, medical and education. Of course none of the legal American citizens will reap these benefits. Infrastructure sucks. I have lived in other states, all of them having better maintained roads than California. Oh, did I mention the high speed rail boondoggle? Already Billions wasted by Moonbeam Jerry Brown. Now the new dumbshit in charge has decided to finish the rail system from Modesto to Bakersfield, as I recall. I doubt anybody travels between those two cities enough to make that system pay for itself. It was a stupid idea to begin with. But then again the Liberal Left is known for their stupid ideas, especially in California.

There's a point in which wealth becomes obscene.

Everything above what YOU make is obscene. Why should one person's extraordinary abilities and hard work, and yes, luck, be penalized because others don't work. Socialism, thy name is envy.

So what is the point at which YOU would voluntarily give most of your paycheck or Social Security check back to the government because you think its an 'obscene' amount ?

Similarly I have never met anyone who refused an increase to their pay. I do know a lot of folks who give a significant portion of their money to legitimate charities involved in helping people. AND they pay their taxes ! So how much would you refuse to take from your employer/SSi/investments ?????

Sucks to live in California...
Live where the tax rates & housing are more reasonable...
Why should people in low tax rate states subsidise people who live in high tax states.

Actually, the people that live in high tax states like New York subsidize other states with their federal income tax. New York collects more than it gets and states like Mississippi, Kentucky, Georgia get more than they pay. You low tax residents should thank New York and California every day.

Here are the top 10 most dependent states:

1 New Mexico
2 Kentucky
3 Mississippi
4 Alabama
5 West Virginia
6 South Carolina
7 Arizona
8 Alaska
9 Montana
10 Louisiana

You're lucky you're getting a refund. Many people will get a smaller refund or have to pay. The change in the tax code didn't work out too well for a lot of people.

Once again, everyone got more in each pay check through out the year and will pay far less in taxes over all compared to previous years. If you owe money at tax time it's because you failed to adjust your withholdings. When the new tax law went into effect the withholdings were reduced. It was up to you to adjust your withholdings. If you failed to do that you have no one else to blame but yourself.

California isn't the best place to be located. With all of the droughts, wildfires, mudslides and earthquakes what's here today is gone tomorrow. Perhaps you should bring back Arnold. LOL. You seem to have all the answers. Maybe you should run for governor.

All of the taxpayer money "wasted" on government boondoggles goes to (1) useless government employees who reliably vote for the politicians who voted for the boondoggle that employs 'em, or (2) friends of politicians who vote for (or at least don't vote to repeal) the boondoggles, and at least some of that money goes back to the politicians.

This is not "waste" to the politician who gets the votes and/or who gets paid.
