P mode lets you control more than ISO, but I understand what you meant. And, in addition to your point about the D7500 being much lighter, (it's only 3/4 the weight of the D500), it also costs half as much. If I was in the market for one of those two models I would probably go for the D500 with its more advanced professional functionality, but for many people the much less expensive and lighter D7500 is a better choice.

Mark .. 3/4 of the weight of the D500, huh?

"The Nikon D7500 is actually 5% lighter than the D7200 (and 16% lighter than the D500), and tips the scales at a modest 640g / 1lb 6.6oz. Despite this minor weight saving though, it feels reassuringly solid in the hand."

Not sure about half as much … last time I looked, the D500 was STILL - pretty much - a two grand DSLR. The D7500 RETAILS at $1300. That's a $700 difference. For that money, you could ALSO buy a D7200! Then - you'd STILL have two SD card slots!!! ...

Nikon pro cameras have a round eyepiece so that different eyepieces can be screwed on. I don't know if this is important to you but you can attach the DK-17M with 1.2x magnification, the DK-19 eyepiece, or both together.

I just ran across a post from last November (that has just been brought back to life) that reminds me of another consideration around the D7500. Specifically, this camera does not have what Nikon calls an "Aperture Interface Ring." This is the mechanical ring surrounding the lens mount which interfaces with a tab on the back of a number of older and current lenses to communicate the widest f stop to the camera. Without this ring, a number of lenses will not support TTL metering and must be used in Manual mode.

Before making your final decision, be sure to look at the Lens Compatibility Chart on NikonUsa's website to see if this involves any lenses that you may want to use now or in the future. The D500 does have an AI Ring and is fully compatible with many more lenses.

You're correct about the price, I didn't realize I had been looking at the price of a refurbished D7500 which was a lot less. As far as weight, the D7500 weighs 640g. The D500 weighs 860g. That makes the D7500 74.4% or 3/4, the weight of the D500. That's 25.6 % less. Not sure where the 16% comes from.

Thanks for that acknowledgement, Mark … the D500 - at two grand, is too rich for MY blood - that's for sure!!!! … Even more than my last car!!!! ….

Just as $1300 is manageable (the price paid for my a77 II) so is - a pound-and-a-half - manageable - for the D7500. About the same as the prior D7100, as a matter-of-fact. But, that D500 - is larger, and - weighs more - than the D610 - Nikon's least expensive FX!!! ... Not for me - no matter HOW advanced it is!!! ... But, I suspect - I'll be picking up a D7500 - sometime in the not-too-distant future!!!!!

Larry … that's - most definitely - ONE thing - which can be said in favor of the D500. If one looks at that chart - one can clearly see - there are NO incompatibility issues with ANY Nikon Lens - EVER MADE!!! … This, unfortunately - is not the case with all the others. The latest AF-P series, for instance - are fully compatible with the D7500, but NOT the AI series, NOR the E-Type Series. But, the AF-P series - aren't fully compatible with a whole lot of other Nikon bodies. So, it would seem - if you get a D7500, and limit future purchases to AF-P lenses, or AF ones, or AF-S ones - you'll do just fine. There are many, many - in that pretty wide group, anyway. It's a matter of looking onward and upwards, and not behind ….
