Sort of new, but I had a question about viewing member's pictures. I have seen several that I like. I work on my computer daily and like to have a variety of background images. Is it proper here to download images for that purpose only? I would NEVER use images to gain anything monetarily or claim as my own.

This may be covered somewhere in the posted rules, but I am asking because I have not see it stand out to me. Hope this does not put anyone off and please let me know if it does... I have thick skin and am not a spring chicken.

Thanks.

It is polite to ask. You could send a PM to the user.

I download occasionally to view EXIF but ALWAYS delete them. Sometimes I forget to, but when I find a really good capture on my computer, I delete it knowing it couldn’t possibly be mine...

I can't imagine why anyone would want to download any of my images, but in those rare cases where someone wants to do so, I permit it.
You might want to look into the concept of copyleft.

As far as I am concerned, as soon as anyone posts anything to the internet they no longer own it. The internet does. On the off chance that anything of mine should ever interest you, Have Fun! Photo credit, where appropriate, would be nice, but, I don't expect even that much from the internet. I never post anything that I wouldn't freely give away.

If you post the image here without the download option, the image is small but then I would ask you if I want to copy it. If you have the download option do you want me to ask you for permission?

On the other hand, imagine trying to prevent someone from downloading an image from the Internet.

That may be as far as your concerned. However, a court of law will more than likely disagree with you on that. I'm fairly certain of that, as I've already had the experience. They ceased displaying the photo and remitted a court-ordered payment.

If you so like a photo, I would tell the photographer, and ask if you could download the pic.

Usually a polite request sent in the form of an email or PM would probably garner you permission to use the photo for personal use.

If they're posted on the internet in a downloadable format, they're there for the taking. If you found a plate of chocolate cookies while out walking, would you be concerned about the etiquette? If the person who baked those cookies and left them on a plate in a public place and didn't want them taken, they should begin to start paying attention to the numerous posts on UHH about how to protect their images. Otherwise, it's clear those cookies where placed there to be enjoyed by anyone who wanders by in whatever way they desire.

I'm not advocating taking images and claiming them for your own, selling, etc. But, being naive about how the internet works is a shame, a sad shame, given the purpose of sharing knowledge that this site represents.

Upon joining several months ago, I wasn't familiar with how this crazy forum format worked, so I was allowing my images to be downloaded (unknowingly) Over time, I don't like the idea of allowing my images to be downloaded. But upon occasion, I' will grant this to those whom have shown favor to my images. But as a general rule. Down loading or simply copy/paste/save images within showing just credit is like stealing. Thus many of those images you see online from me, are merely random images I've allowed to be seen online. While other images are kept for my eyes only and would never see on the net. Many of my images (in the past) have been stolen or not given credit where credit is due.

I might question the motivation of someone who left a plate of cookies out in a public place. I would probably avoid eating any of them.
(And not just because I need to lose some of my winter weight).

It is never appropriate under any circumstances, in my opinion, to use anyone's work for any use without their express verbal or written authorization. Ask them if you want to use something.
