Teal are one of my favorite waterfowl. They are so tiny. They are also the only ducks I have observed hovering. I tossed in a couple of others as well. Enjoy.
A very nice series. I am impressed with the sharpness!!
Your usual good work, David! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Mike. Just out having a bit of fun. I will get out for a couple of hours every few days.
Very pretty.
By the way, ducks can't hover; they are in fact terrible flyers.

The male Green wing teal was lifting out of the water and would hover about three seconds above the female. Did it hover as well as a hummingbird? Certainly not, but they are small and light enough to manage a brief hover. Sorry to disappoint you. They are quite astute flyers and can manage intricate maneuvers during flight.

I'm not disappointed at all and I'm not disputing what you saw but, ducks are incapable of hovering by themselves. I'm an amateur ornithologist and I actually know a wee little bit about birds and what you saw was not a duck hovering. It most likely was caught in a breeze or mild updraft that made it momentarily appear to be hovering. As far as hovering as an act of flapping its wings, not going to happen. As for being astute flyers, they are fast flyers but also quite erratic.
There are a few species of birds other than the hummingbird that can hover, at least for a very limited time. They are pretty much all birds of prey. Kestrels, Kites, Harriers and some varieties of Hawks posses the ability to hover for varying short periods of time.

David, another fantastic set.
Ducks and birds in general such awesome subjects. They have the color and the feathers have very unique patterns that are not available in other wildlife.
