What difference a year makes

First of all thank you to all for providing such wonderful, useful information and inspiration.

I joined a little over a year ago with the goal of sports, theater and landscape photography. I set an initial budget of $1000. I purchased a refurbished Nikon D7200 with a Nikon DX 55-300mm 4.5-5.6 zoom lens package. I shortly added a Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 wide angle.

Here's a short timeline of my progress. There's not a day that goes by that I don't learn something from someone here. So thanks again.

I would straighten no.1, unless it takes to much of the top and button, otherwise 'the boys done good'.

I too, have lots to be thankful for my time here and I hope you continue to do so, and in turn become contributor.

Agree. You are doing great. The last image is outstanding action capture. If you use Lightroom, using the brush, lighten the faces of those two players. Plus you learned you do not need to spend big bucks to make great images.

One thing that I'd be thinking about is that in the hockey pictures there is a LOT of pure white and little dots of dark (players) and you can see that your images are underexposed a bit (hence the advice to lighten them in Lightroom)
After all the subjects are the players and their faces, not the ice.

I'd rather realize what's happening and shoot 1 stop over exposed in that situation (or 1.5 stops) and not have to fix anything later. That's my preference.

But in any case...glad you are enjoying the journey. (and I really like the B&W shot.)

You are so spot on about the folks of UHH contributing so much of their hard learned experience to those of us that wish to learn and improve like us. Every morning when I open up my current issue of https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/ email I am eager to read the problem solving and educating wisdom of my more experienced brethren. While they don't always agree on methodology or have different experiences to bring to the party, they all want to share and help others along their personal photographic journey. So, to the members of this UHH photographic fraternity, I echo "That 1NJGuy" and add,
Bravo Zulu,

Your second photograph is a classic example of depth of field, so much that it appears to be 3 dimensional. The players are tack sharp while the background is not. The hockey shots might allow +1 stop of compensation to brighten the player's faces. Play with it and see if it allows the faces to be distinguishable. Lots of good points in all of your work, nicely done.
