Hi group,
We (wife and I) are writing a book on the various self-publishing types (eBook, print on demand, audio, video, etc.) We are currently working on the last chapter - audiobooks so we checked Google looking for an inexpensive or free audio editing program. We found one called WavePad by NCH. When we downloaded the software we found it was part of more than 20 other programs call the NCH Suite and a photo editing software was one of those. I only "played" with it for a few minutes but it seemed to do as good of job as Photoshop Elements does. We used Adobe CC for our editing needs but the NCH Suite was quite impressive for a free set of programs. Do any of you have experience with the NCH Suite, specifically the photo editing program? I don't remember reading about it on UHH and I've been here for a number of years. Your comments about this program would be interesting. Take care & ...

I would be interested in getting your book. I self published a book in 2005 - 500 copies in paperback for $5000! I have written others, but will never again have them printed. I gave half of them away.

I never heard of NCH, but have been using another suite AVS4YOU. It wasn't free, but very reasonable.

I can't speak for or against NCH, but did your Google search turn up an open-source audio editor called Audacity?

I have used NCH software for many years. I have not used their post processing applications, but I have and still use their Disc Burning, Wave Pad & Express Zip programs. Excellent programs.

Amazon KDP, lets you print on demand so absolutely no cost to the author.

I downloaded the Kindle version after reading your post. It offers a lot for free. Beware of in app purchases. I have that turned off so it wouldn't even show the price, or I missed it.

I've tried some of the NCH demos. They would occasionally crash on me, and they did not uninstall cleanly... in the end, I was forced to go into and edit the registry to fully uninstall the software. Besides that, I thought the NCH programs were so-so; they didn't really offer anything you can't get with freeware programs. Not bad, a logical menu system and workspace, but they didn't really offer anything unique or extraordinary.

Hi rharvey & via the lens,

We've self-published fly fishing related books starting in the mid-90s then switched to brick-and-mortar publishing from 2000 to 2015. We started doing eBooks through Kindle a little over 2 years ago and print-on-demand books a year ago. We think both processes through Kindle are really good. Our challenge is the books we publish have a LOT of pictures, illustrations, and screen grabs. Controlling file size while maintaining quality is always a challenge. Anyway, I don't come on here to sell books, I'm here for the photography information you good UHH folks readily share - my thanks. Take care & ...

NCH has been around for a long time, and I've used many of their products on and off. Thanks for the reminder. I'll look at them again.

Audacity is a great free audio program. I use it to make promos for my radio show. Easy to learn and does a great many audio editing functions

Audacity works on Macs and PCs, so it gets my vote, too, especially for Windows users.

An absolutely excellent choice for audio editing and podcasting on the Macintosh is Apple's GarageBand, which comes free with every new Mac and is integrated with iMovie (also free with every new Mac) and iTunes AND iCloud.

GarageBand is even free for iPads and iPhones, so you can record anywhere, bounce the files to iCloud, and import the files to the Mac from iCloud for final editing and mixing.

For me, GarageBand replaced the equivalent of a whole room full of pro studio gear (multi-track tape machines, pre-amps, limiters, compressors, equalizers, phasers, flangers, expanders...) that I used 35 to 45 years ago. Its files are upward-compatible with Apple's pro audio editor, Logic Pro X. Yet it is easy and intuitive to learn and use, and advanced plug-ins are available from third parties.

I have downloaded Audacity and have not used it much. I found it has a learning curve that requires some reading and practice to become efficient. Overall seems like a good program.

I have used NCH products, of various types, for several years. Found them very acceptable. I seem to recall that NCH is an Australian company.

I have used all of the NCH products as well as Audacity and they worked well for what I needed at the time with no problems, but I have since began using ImageJ/Fiji and it blows all the others including Photoshop all to pieces. Yes, it is free and open source but has a very steep learning curve but try it anyway. I'm sure you will be surprised.
