Upgrade Nikon Camera Body

I currently have the Nikon D5100 and would like to upgrade in the next 18 to 24 months to a "pro" style body. The reason to upgrade is a better sensor and it's ability to handle higher ISO's. I am asking your thoughts on two issues: 1) am i correct to assume the pro grade handles higher ISO's better than the D5100 and 2) which camera body would be the upgrade to that better sensor? Don't hold back your comments!!!

Nikon is expected to release upgrades to the D5100 (D5200) as well as the D7000 (D7100) in the next few months. The current D5100 and D7000 share the same sensor but different processors make the D7000 much better at high ISO's. There are also heavy rumors of a full frame (D600) body coming yet this month. The D600 might be the way to go if it is released in the expected price range of $1500 to $1800. Otherwise, I would skip the D5200 and look at the D7100 since you have the time to look around.
I you want to make the BIG leap, go for the D800, its available right now and is an amazing body.

18 to 24 months is a long time in camera world. Rumors are about all you have now. On the Nikon side, the newest ones are the D4 and the D800. Rumor has it that a possible full frame "entry" level camera, D600. But then again there are also rumors to D7100 (crop frame), a D400 also.
All I can suggest you determine your needs/wants and keep track of what is coming.

One thing that has not been considered is Acellis' glass. If he/she has a heavy investment in DX lenses then the leap to FX is going to be an expensive one. Also, with the arrival of the D800 I would have expected the price of the D700 to fall substantially, but it hasn't. Maybe if the D600 makes an appearance the D700 price tag will fall.
However, as others have pointed out, 18 months is a long time in today's market. Even the D800 could have a new brother by then!

What, exactly are the "Pro" pix you are wishing to achieve? Post some pix you have achieved with the 5100. If you have access to a camera shop, see if they perhaps might loan/rent the camera that MT suggested and try that out. 8-)

Thank you all. This is great info. I indeed thought the new models might render the current bodies cheaper on the used market and therefore allow me to upgrade at a cheaper price. C_David. Pics to come. Please realize that I am aware of my skill level but I was hoping to grow in all aspects of photography and buy fewer but great equipment. I would most likely sell the 5100 and buy a used upgrade rather than the new releases. I wanted to hear your thoughts on it.

My glass is (are?) 18-55mm 3.5-6 kit lense, 55 -- 200mm 4.5 - 6? and Sigma 150 to 500mm 5 - 6.5 and finally, 50mm 1.8 prime.

This is part of the reason I need be able to handle higher ISO. I could also purchase the 70 -- 200 2.8 and be pretty dog gone happy with that and perhaps that would be a better solution than a new body?!?!? man i am confused.
