It probably has something to do with the focusing range. In 'full' it searches the entire focusing range from macro range all the way to infinity. In 'limit' it searches either from an 'intermediate' distance to infinity, or from macro range to an intermediate distance. I have no idea what range 'intermediate' would be. The lens would 'adjust' the focusing range to focus more quickly, since you've 'told' the lens that you're only making photos in the limited subject distance range.
This is strictly a WAG.

I own this and love it. The limit switch works two ways. In macro mode it limit focus range to macro only. In regular made it locks out macro mode focus. Very usefull.

With the limit switch at the full position, pull the focus ring in to manual and turn it all the out then flip the switch to limit and turn the focus ring again and you can see that the barrel won't go back in all the way. The switch moves a mechanical lock on the barrel at the position in the picture, so it must be turned off (full position) and turned in or out manually past the mechanical limit.
