My interest is in getting more mm for wildlife photos, using a 300mm lens.

A camera club member suggested the above, to get effective mm of over 900mm. I've seen photos, hand held, of ducks, tact sharp.

The megapixels are only14.2, the screen size is small. It's an early generation platform.

used pricing is very low considering longer reaching lenses, or current bodies, such as the D850 or new mirrorless.

anyone with current experience, or advice.

When it sounds too good to be true, it usually is, but this guy shoots incredible wildlife as a now retired, 40+ years professional, using this much more affordable techique.

The Nikon CX sensor has a 2.74 crop factor so a 300mm will give an equivalent field of view to 822mm on a full frame camera. Nikons N1 system has been whipped on for years for its 1" CX sensor size but it does yield some very good results if shots are taken in good light. I have actually used my N1 V3 on my 600mm F4 (1644mm equivalent) a couple times just for the fun of it and the images were impressive printed even at 16x24.
Plus, since these cameras are now discontinued in favor of the Nikon Z series they have become pretty inexpensive to buy.
Good luck with your decision.

I have used a Nikon 1 J1 (10MP) with the FT-1 adapter and the nikkor 55-300 AFS VR lens for several years for birds. The combination of a 1" sensor and an 810 mm equivalent focal length works great. It only weighs a little more than two pounds and can be easily handheld so you can go to where the birds are easily. The Nikon 1 cameras with the FT-1 adapter have fast and accurate center point focus. The 1" sensor provides a quality image.Because it's mirrorless it has a quick burst mode for "spray and pray". Also does HD video at 60i to capture movement accurately.
