I had never heard this expression, but drinking beer and then wine will not safe you from a hangover.

"We all know the old adage: “beer before wine and you’ll feel fine; wine before beer and you’ll feel queer,” and now it’s been rigorously tested by 90 volunteers. Scientists have concluded that drinking beer before wine won’t save you from a hangover, and that any combination of beer then wine, wine then beer, only beer or only wine results in the same hangover intensity. Kai Hensel at the University of Cambridge, UK, says the sayings about beer before wine originated in medieval times, when drinks and hygiene conditions were very different, so they might once have been true."

Thank you, it's always been a mystery to me. The same saying was in Germany and my parents believed it. I always thought either way there is alcohal in it, that gives you the hang-over. Sorry, no spell check on my SAMSUNG tablet that I can find.

Jerry, I had always heard it as whiskey before beer, you're in the clear. Beer before whiskey is always risky.

Your post reminded me of one of my favorite teachers. She was an English teacher. One morning she came into the classroom, not looking well. She placed her books and briefcase on the table in front of the room and sat down. When class started, she, in a very soft voice, said, "I'm only going to teach you one thing this morning. If you start drinking beer stay with beer. If you start drinking champagne stay with champagne. Don't switch part way through the evening.

Now, anyone making what I think is an excessive amount of noise leaving the room will fail this semester. The class is dismissed".

35 of us tiptoed out of the room. Admittedly, she did have a flair for the dramatic, as she had recently returned from a sabbatical during which she studied Shakespeare in London. I took an inordinate number of English classes just because she was teaching them.

Whisky, Beer, never fear
Beer, Whisky, mighty risky

We had a good english teacher but she never taught us that.
She did hobnob with students (back in the '50s) and was well liked by all.
She attended our High School reunions to great acclaim.

I guess teachers aren't allowed to do that sort of thing now.
Everyone's loss.

Bob,

Wish I had teachers like yours. I went to Catholic school 1-12 and had nuns and Holy Cross Brothers for high school. There was no goofing off or talking about drinking ever.

It probably depends upon your ethnicity!
It has been suggested that the Japanese have little or no tolerance for beer but can drink spirits in excess.
Northern Europeans drink a lot of beer, whilst southern Europeans drink more wine. Fortified wines have Brandy in them and Gins are more fruit based. Potato Vodka was a poor mans spirit as was potheen. (Both are low temperature distillation traditionally a cottage industry)

The Scottish drink Heavy beer(made from barley) with a whisky chaser. Both have a long cultural history whereas in England, Brandy was the preferred spirit and beer (Made from wheat)was quite weak and livened with a hot poker.

In the US you have an orange Liqueur called 'Van der Hum' made by a Dutch immigrant who couldn't remember its European name....

It is not until post WW11 that 'National' Beer production started. Prior to that individual breweries made 'local' beers often at strengths 'agreed' with local legislators.

Up until the late 1970's Beer destined for holiday resorts of Mill and Mine workers was 'temporarily' less Specific Gravity (Strong) during the 'holiday season' in order to 'keep the peace'. That stopped as small and Government owned breweries closed and the modern day day 'strong' beers and Ciders came out in the 1980's.

The history of drink is fascinating. It has shaped European culture since pre Roman times....There is evidence of amphora (Big wine pots from the Mediterranean) in Wales and Cornwall since early copper and tin mining (Pre-Bronze age). Alcohol has been known of since The Ancients ate grasses like wheat and barley.

The teacher was teaching the evils of alcohol. She dropped a worm in a glass of water and it just swam around. She dropped it in a glass of alcohol and it died. She ask the class what they had learned. Little Billy said "If you drink alcohol you will never get worms."

My personal experience seems to attest to that, If I have wine with dinner I might occasionally have a single malt with a splash of water after but no more.
