Although a b&w fan, I prefer the colour version here - makes the nut stand out better than b&w. I don’t like the out of focus tree - it’s not necessary as the nut is obvious and the tree being so major in frame coverage, makes the blur too ‘in your face’.
I think you have something to work with here. I usually work with my tree bark photos in b/w an did so with yours. Initially I began to try to hone in on a composition I was more comfortable with, followed by lightening the dominating dark crack where you have some sharper focus. A little dodging. Im sure what I have done could be further improved on, but frankly, a nut in a crack is only so interesting

I think it was Joel Sartori who said "If you want your photographs to be more interesting stand in front of more interesting stuff." This would have been more interesting if the entire image was pin sharp.
