Very beautiful, Larry and can remember as a youngster on our farm that there was many in several of our fields but haven't seen one for years!

My last central Florida safari turned up this eastern Meadowlark picking his meal out/off the ground. Someone posted a Meadowlark the other day here on the Hog and I was surprised that they are so scarce and skittish in general from the comments made ! - but after thinking about it, I guess they ARE ! - and they are a gorgeous bird with GREAT song ! Where I go, I am fortunate to be able to photograph them at great length !

Canon 80D, 400 prime, 1.4X, from carpod in dappled open shade....as always, shot as JPEG and PP in Elements 9

I do not know what it is he is eating ! ? - thanks for stopping by .....

The Western Meadowlark thrives on the Great Plains and is the State Bird of Kansas. They are commonly seen in flocks perched on fences or utility lines. It is somewhat darker than the Eastern variety and, IIRC, a bit larger. You are right about the great song.

I lived in North Carolina for 14 years and never saw a meadowlark while there. It probably has to do with the terrain. They apparently do not like the forests.

No meadows, no Larks. Habitat loss is making them rare in the Eastern US. Haven't heard or seen one in 50 years
