I realize that I'm late to this conversation, but the short answer is that most in the current generation (and the previous generation, too) don't care. It's not about quality, it's just about convenience. Would you listen to stereo music with only one earbud? They do. Would you even listen to music with earbud? They do, and don't know or care about the difference. When they snap a picture, it's not about the image, it's only about them. There is generally no permanence considered at all. So they are really not even doing snapshots.

The kids I work with at school do a variety of projects. Some involve photography. The big first step is to get them to think more than 3 seconds into the future. And the kids who can or do think differently about this are considered different and odd by the majority of their peers.

Unfortunately, you're exactly correct. Last night's Grammy's were proof positive: for all the
fireworks and lavish production, most of the performances sucked. Covering Aretha Franklin,
Roberta Flack (poor Alicia!--totally wrong style for the song), Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway
(Chloe x Halle -- dissonant as a cat fight) is a really bad idea. The producer had to know it wouldn't
measure up-- so I can only conclude that the target audience hasn't heard the originals.

I suppose now we're in for covers of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, Dionne Warwick,
Roy Orbison, CSN&Y, the Ramones, MBV, Al Greene, Booker T & the MGs, Labelle, Joni Mitchell...

And just in case the singer deosn't sound bad enough, they'll crank up AutoTune so he or she sounds like
the IBM 7094 at Bell Labs in 1961 (the inspiration for HAL 9000 on 2001: A Space Odyssey):

These days, electric guitarists hae trouble finding session work anymore, because electric guitar
doesn't sound good though ear buds.

Photography now is dominated by two approaches: "shoot lots and cull" and "fix it in PhotoSlop".

Maybe cameras need to come with a warning sticker: "WARNING: The Surgeon General has
determined that photography is difficult and requires a photographer. Deal with it--or find
another hobby."

I guess this is what it's like to live inside a collapsing empire. Now we know how they felt in Rome
in the age of Nero, Domitian or Commodus. Never think it can't get worse...it always can.
