As a former Coast Guardsmen (retired 26yrs svc). The USCG is a military service 7th largest Navy in the world, in their history (and when I joined) operated under the Treasury dept, then the Dept of Transportation, and after 9/11 they operate under the Dept of Homeland Security, in time of a war/conflict they become part of the Navy. There is no such thing as (no longer part of) and that is the rest of the story.

Sorry...they do not fall under The purview of the Pentagon except during wartime. I'm not throwing shade at the Coast Guard. I consider them part of our armed forces, but how many coast guard members went to Iraq, Syria, Afghanastan? Yes the protect our country similar to a home guard... But so does the National Guard... And a LOT of them went to those conflicts. Having a son who served meritorious in Iraq, and is 100% disabled because of it, I respect and thank EVERY service member regardless of branch or level of involvement... And that includes you.

I agree 100%. I am an AF vet (69-73). I was an aircrew member as an aircraft loadmaster. It was always bad when we had to go to a Navy base. If we had to go into crew rest the actually hand us or bed linens, officers and enlisted.

RE-read what I stated, you sir are wrong...Home Guard? geez. In time of war CG falls under the navy period. Plenty of national guard troops deployed to the middle east. The CG is (right now) only 44,000 strong. They do some much with so little it's a wonder they can do their jobs. There is no place in this world you can't go and not find a Coastie somewhere. The CG has participated in all major/minor conflicts since.

Please note the link below approx 20 or 21 rows down center photograph an orange hh-65 dolphin helo is on your left, on the right is a view of her near san francisco,
narrative follows from the pic: quote:
The Arabian Sea (Feb. 16, 2003) -- The U.S. Coast Guard High Endurance Cutter Boutwell (WHEC 719) moves into position along-side a cargo ship to deploy a Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) team. Boutwell is deployed in the Arabian Sea conducting Maritime Interdiction Operations (MIOs) in support of U.N. sanctions on Iraq. unquote....

So few went and are still being deployed there......As a side note I rode the Boutwell in 77 and 78 and after her deployment to the persian gulf she was decommissioned and sold to the Philippine navy..

Air Force Vet here, so I can relate.

When I joined the USAF in 1962, my training flight was the first to use a barracks since 1956. We had to knock our boots together every morning to get the scorpions out of them. The old tile floor could not be polished, "it broke apart". They were building new barracks, to be finished 3 months after our graduation. But we had a great drill sergeant.
