A pair of G&W Australia locomotives skirt the shores of Lake Hart in the mid north of South Australia with a load of iron ore in April 2017. A few kilometres further on the train stops for a crew change near Wirrappa and is dwarfed by the local terrain as it powers up and continues its journey south.

Love your photographs Thorny. Can you share more of them?

Thanks for looking AW. My interest in trains started from a very young age while growing up in the Adelaide Hills in South Australia. We lived near the main south line out of Adelaide and I traveled by train to and from school and later to and from work. I can still remember the sight, sound and smell of large steam locomotives hauling heavy loads up the steep grades and sharp curves, near where I lived, sometimes struggling for traction. I went on to do a five year apprenticeship with the South Australian Railways as a Fitter and Machinist / Diesel Fitter. You may like to check out some of my earlier posts in the Trains section.

Thanks for the info Thorny Devil; I certainly will look for Your earlier posts. What kind of a diesel is that and who makes them? Last night was model railroad meeting night and I mentioned Your photos to some of the members and a lot of them starting telling Me about Genesse Wyoming and how much railroad stuff They own. Pretty neat. A lot of the members know a lot about railroad history. I'll be watching for Your next batch of photos; thanks again for posting.

Information for the two locomotives, GWA008 and GWA007 is a bit scarce but I believe they were built by EDI Rail in Cardiff, New South Wales, Australia. Co-Co bogie configuration, AC power, tractive effort 4,300 hp, and most likely GE engines.

Thank You Thorny Devil for the info. I really appreciate it. I like to model equipment from the 50's to early 60's so I can run steam engines and early diesels. Modern diesel's in the U.S.A. just don't do much for Me, but these engines in Your photo's really caught my eye. I might have to talk to some of the more talented modelers in Our club and see about attempting a modification project which would result in a running pair of these engines. Thanks again for sharing Your photos and for the info.

Hi AW. I grew up in the 1950s - 1960s so I also have a liking for steam and diesel locos from that era. Depending on what scale you are modeling in, the NR diesel electric locomotive which is similar in appearance to the GWA locos in my photos, is available in HO gauge from some Australian model railroad suppliers. I am sure a search on your favourite web browser would turn up something. Please note the following images of an NR loco that I found parked up in a remote siding presumably because it failed while in service and was waiting to be returned to the depot on the next available service. Regards TD
