Caddo Lake - Texas

Back in the early 90's, while visiting Jefferson, TX to browse the antique stores, we took a side trip to Caddo Lake to take a tour on one of the steam powered paddle boats that were in operation on the lake at the time. These steam powered boats were eerily quiet as they cruised in the shallow waters of the lake and through the lily pad groves. After the boat ride as we were leaving to head back to Grapevine we stopped at a spot that looked like it had seen better days and found this boat sitting still in the water in a little inlet. I had not rekindled my photography interest at that time so all I had with me was an Olympus Quick Zoom 35mm film camera, which I used to take this image.

This is a scan of the 4x6 photo print that I found as I was going through some boxes of photographs a while back. Despite the lack of technical quality that a much finer lens might have rendered, I still like this image. I've tried to process it to improve the color quality of a near 30-year old print, and to clean up the inevitable dust and scratches that appear on old photographs.

Technical details aside, how does it work as an image? Comments and critique are welcome.

You are right, Larry! If I was taking that photo today, I would look for a vantage point that would place something in the foreground. Thank you for your comment.

I like it - it looks like the boat is sitting in snow.

Thank you, Dragonlady!

That is some sort of swamp scum. There must be many varieties of such, and some apparently are not green or a shade thereof. From: https://www.townofchapelhill.org/home/showdocument?id=28866

“Whitish-grey scums appear often in still waters. They form a shiny, almost oily film on the surface of the water (A, B, C). Sometimes they will also appear as a “foam” (D). When examined with the compound microscope, these scums reveal a diversity of Protozoans that include: Amoebozoans with or without shells (E, F), Ciliates (G) and Flagellates (H). These organisms feed on bacteria that have concentrated is these areas by the wind blowing over the surface of the water. Generally, unless the water is receiving a source of sewage, there are no safety issues with water that contains Protozoan scums. They can provide a good source of protozoan material for Biology classes.”

Thank you Wareagle! I don't, for the life of me, remember the location of this shot. It must have been some distance up a creek/inlet into the lake as the water was still as can be. By the way, does anyone still run the steam powered paddle boats on the lake tours? I really enjoyed that.

Thanks, Stan. I've learned something new today and that's almost always a good thing.

Love the boat and swamp just the way they are. Sometimes first impressions work best, I think. Thanks.
