You might consider a day trip to Carlsbad Caverns. Six hours North is Colorado Springs with the Air Force Academy, Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak and numerous tourist attractions. An hour West on Highway 50 from Pueblo is the Canon City Prison Museum. Another eight miles West on 50 is Royal Gorge Park.

Colorado Springs area is a great place to visit and if you do, don't miss Pike's Peak.
Santa Fe to Taos via the "High Road". Some interesting old churches and beautiful scenery. Rio Grande Gorge Bridge 15 miles West of Taos. Enchanted Circle, Taos, Red River, Angel Fire back to Taos. VietNam Veterans Memorial in Angel Fire.
As already mentioned Sedona, Az is a beautiful place with lots of red rocks. In between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, NM west of interstate 25 is Kasha Katuwe National Monument. Just a rough estimate, maybe 20 miles off the interstate. Not a bad drive, gravel road but certainly no 4 wheel needed. IF there is a HEAVY rain, the road may wash out, just call first. Of course August would probably be hot and parking is limited/ early morning is recommended and no dogs. These pics are from tent rocks. And there are amazing views from the top also.
North of Taos is the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge but just north of that about 5 to 10 miles is the Greater Earthship Community. Google "Images of Greater Earthship Community" to see some very interesting structures.
Plaza Blanca in Abiquiu is a fascinating place

I'm going to attend a workshop 8/10-18 in Taos & Santa Fe. I want to spend some time in the vicinity either before, after, or both, and am looking for suggestions. I can fly to any airport within one or two days in any direction. I intend to spend time at the Petrified Forest and on the Turquoise Trail, and have been to the Grand Canyon. Other than that...well, that's why I'm writing. My initial plan was to fly to Albuquerque, but am looking for ideas before I book any flights.
Thanks all in advance.

Addendum: please keep in mind that this is August.

Be aware 8/17 to 8-19 is 9ne of the busiest times in Santa Fe....its Indian Market, so finding lodging is tougher.
If you go the Albuquerque route, make sure to hit Old Town and the Sandia tram......excellent views. Also, petroglyph national monument, Sky city, White Sands National monument (excellent photo ops), Nelson Canyon Vista trail............
Ghost Ranch, Ohio caliente, Chaco Canyon, Abiquiu. You don’ need to spend a lot of windshield time to find fascinating places
We traveled through Albuquerque in late Spring last year and do agree with other recommended sites there (especially the Sandia tram). Since you're planning flying to somewhere in the region, a different option that I would recommend is to fly into Cortez,CO and tour Mesa Verde NP there. Lots of great photo opportunities in Mesa Verde. A guided tour down into one of the cliff houses is highly recommended.
Cranes & Light Geese will not be at Bosque del Apache in August.
Rich1939, what do you enjoy photographing? Do you enjoy hiking? Nature and wildlife? Street photography? Flora? Albuquerque probably has it all but it would help to know what you’d enjoy.
