Please go on Amazon and look at the spec's on the ASUS 4K HDMI Monitor for photographers. I did and bought to use with my Canon PRO 10 Printer and Dell I7 Computer. What I see on the Screen is what I get out of the printer. This is a great looking and performing Monitor for photo editing.

I use 3 32" tvs. You can get a 32" monitor at tigerdirtact.com for $179.

The OP has a PC that has 1 video output and max resolution of 1920x1080. He is looking for better color rendition.

You would have to decide whether you want more pixel count or accurate color rendition. Well if you want both I think it will exceed the $400.

With the graphics card you mention, I am having trouble understanding the card's maximum resolution. Are you sure that you are not seeing the monitor's maximum resolution in the dropdown menus because the computer knows the limitations of the monitor? I think your card is more capable than what you might be looking at.

I may have resolved my quest for a new monitor and perhaps a new card. I had no need for professional grade equipment since my work is strictly amateur and generally limited to an audience of one; my wife. Like many, the pictures are processed, printed and then placed in a box.
I ordered a Viewsonic VX 2778 HD monitor which shows decent specs, the resolution I wanted and was affordable at a bit over $325. The specs for my present card seem to show that using the hdmi output, the card will support the monitors resolution. N Videa tech support raised some questions, but said to try.

If not, I can order a gigabyte Ge Force GTX 1050 2 g card for about $100. Dell support indicates this card is compatible with my older Dell machine.
The choices out there are endless. Thanks to all who responded.

Nothing's wrong, but why leave well enough alone. Sorry but don't want to sell my Dell. Five or six years old, but does what I want. Just wondering if a better monitor and or card would improve my photo editing.

I have two ASUS PB287Q monitors for my desktop machines and I've found the colour to be extremely good... I don't use them for photographs, except for viewing them after downloading. The info below is from literature from the supplier:

The first menu is called Splendid, and it's where you find the PB287Q’s eight picture modes. Standard
and sRGB are the closest to a correct sRGB color gamut, D65 white point, and 2.2 gamma value. The
other modes alter color luminance, color temperature, and gamma to varying degrees, in some cases
also limiting brightness. We’ll show you the measurements we took in Game mode (it's not a gaming monitor) later so you can see what we mean.

They may be a little dated, but, should be about $400US.

Thanks for your suggestion. I just ordered a Viewsonic VP 2778 monitor that seems to provide what I want without breaking the bank.

I used to have a Viewsonic, way back, and they were good monitors.

Do you mind letting us know whether your current display adapter does what you need with the new monitor? My guess is it will but I am curious. I don't recall whether already use two monitors. When the new one arrives you will at least have one more for your multiple display setup.

I called N Videa tech support and was told that my present card would not support resolution greater than 1080x1920. I wanted a new larger monitor with greater resolution so started exploring new cards. Nvideo site shows that the present card, nvidea gt 630 will support the greater res that I wanted, but a further call to Nvidea left some questions. There are three or four editions of the nvidea gt 630.
Since both my present card and monitors are more than six years old, (and I'm 86) I decided to cheat the kids and buy both a new monitor and a new card.
I will use the new monitor and one of my older ones in a two monitor setup.
After three days of study and looking, I can tell you there is a lot of confusion and a lot of choices out there.

My computer is about 9 year old. It came with the ATI Firepro V5700 with only 512MB of video RAM. It has 2 display ports and 1 VGA port. The 2 display ports each can support a monitor up to 2560x1600. If the VGA is used it can support up to 2048x1536. Since I upgraded the OS from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and ATI doesn't have a driver for it. The driver that came with Windows 10 works but sometimes gave me problems so I replaced it with an old ATI Firepro V5800 with 1GB video RAM. This card has 2 DVI ports and each can support up to 2560x2048.

I ... cheated.
Wally World had a nice TCL 43" older model tv on sale for $99. They were out, of course. Restocker kid restickered a new one as a replacement for me. It's amazing. Printer can't do HDR- sad.
Do a little Youtube- there's quite a few tv screens that will make great monitors, at better prices.
Size matters.
