Considering the Nikon D850 but don't know which lens to select....I will be doing close up's of flowers, paintings and taking images of students and my paintings which can measure 48 x 48...
Any recommendations?

Look at the AF-S Nikkor Micro 105mm f/2.8G ED VR lens. It's an exceptional Macro/Close up lens and just as good as a portrait lens. I don't know about the 48x48 size, but that is something you can look into if the lens interests you.
If I were going to have one lens for a D850, it would be a Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 FX AF-S G ED. When you refer to "close ups of flowers," not sure if you are talking about macro. This is not a macro lens, but will focus at about 1' and the optical clarity is outstanding. So, as long as your focus is good and your hand is steady, you can crop. The dragonfly is shot with this lens on a D810.
It will definitely excel at the shots of students and paintings and allow you to take full advantage of the light light performance of the 850.
Holy cow! That is an amazing shot.
Thank you so much for your reply....that was one of the lenses I was considering but didn't know if was worth the price. Guess I will bite the bullet and get this one...Your image of the dragon fly is incredible.
Again...thank you!
I agree with Mac. I have used that lens fairly extensively for butterflies, flowers and insects. The length is great for portrait but some don't like it because it shows everything in a woman's complexion.

Great Image RW..Is there an equivalent lens for Canon.
Get prime lens. They usually have almost zero distortion. That would be important when taking photos of the paintings. The Nikon 60mm or 105mm macro would be good.
I wouldn't get a zoom lens. They usually have barrel distortion at wide settings and pincushion at long focal lengths.
Thank you so much for your reply...I was wondering about the macro...you just answered my question for me...thanks
Yes. Nikon 105G. It's a great macro/closeup and portrait lens.

A good all around lens for Nikon is the Sigma 24-105 f4 Art. If you only want to have one lens, this is the one.
LensTip.com does extensive lens testing. This is from their distortion testing of the Nikon Nikkor AF-S 24-70 mm f/2.8E ED VR, 60mm micro, and 105mm micro lenses. With a zoom lens, you would need to do corrections to make the paintings straight.
Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 E VR lens, -4.23% barrel distortion

Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 E VR lens, 1.99% pincushion distortion

60mm Micro. You don't want to be miles away from the art work.
