Don't know what you are doing wrong. I use manual focus with focus magnifier on and everything is in perfect focus,

Is your lens easy to manually focus? Some lens just aren't very good at manual focus.

Maybe your eyesight is off on the lcd screen, but you have adjusted the diopter on the viewfinder to match your eyesight?

Do you wear glasses? Have you made diopter adjustments to your viewfinder?

If I use live view and digital zoom on my D3100 to focus, getting the sharpest image I can on the monitor, the pictures are out of focus. I do better using the viewfinder. What am I doing wrong?

Could the out of focus actually be motion blur. Is VR on? is your shutter speed high enough?

Did you switch the lens to manual focus, if not focus will change once you press the shutter button. You need to be careful, that is acceptable with many lenses, but you can really damage a many lenses focusing manually, when the lens itself is not turned to MF!

Can you expound upon what the ???? is in reference to? I have lenses that were designed for auto focus and the manual focus seems like an after thought with about 1/4 turn to go from closest point to infinity. These lenses are just plain difficult to manually focus. And I have other lenses that are a pure joy to manually focus with lots of focus ring rotation making it a lot easier to fine tune that focus. Simple as that.

Thanks to each of you for responding to my dilemma. Some of your suggestions I had thought of (I did have the lens set to manual) but others I had not. I think it mostly comes down to the old joke about "How do you get to Carnegie Hall." (For any of you young pups out there who don't know the answer, it's "Practice, practice, practice.")

I have one word for you that I did not see in your original post: tripod.

Yes I get you, but if one uses live view and the magnifier, any lens is easy to focus!
