Great shots love the Tanager and Bluebird.Still looking for my first one for both birds.

Richie,

Thank you very much for the kind remarks. I feel very lucky to have seen them. The Bluebird is fairly common here I the larger parks, but the Tanager was really new for me. jak

Beautiful Images

Why, thank you Blair. It was fun taking them, and I actually enjoy the post processing to prepare them for sharing. I mostly had to worry about backgrounds and cropping on these though. The subjects "speak for themselves". jak

Hi Jim,
Great set of -photos. Using bird call to attract the Tanager - what a birder!
Chuck

Chuck,

Thanks. I'm an amateur at both birding and photography but am practicing both skills a lot. I had some good help in learning how to attract the Tanager, and though it took several times to get it to come near, when it did, it far exceeded my expectations...hanging around, singing, and letting me get surprisingly close. jak

These are great! What do you use to play the species’ calls?

Wags,

Thank you for viewing the set and for the kind comment. The bird's calls were played from my iPhone from an app called iBird Ultimate. There is also a very good app called eBird produced by The Cornell Lab at Cornell University. Hope that helps. jak

Great shots! Appreciate the info, gear as well as settings. I'd like to see more of that here, makes it easier to learn from other people's experience.

Thanks for viewing the set and for taking the time to comment. Sometimes I include more info than other times...sometimes I'm just lazier than others, but I thought some UHHers would appreciate it in this instance. I've definitely improved my photography by viewing others' work and sometimes from their technical details. I don't copy them, but I see the relative relationship among the settings and get an idea about what might work in my own shots. jak

Wonderful images Jak. As others have stated, thanks for including the camera settings and I think playing the species' call was a great idea. Your patience was well rewarded. Bev

Bev,

That's very nice of you to say. I call what I do "photobirding" just for short and am reading and practicing a lot. I get lots of ideas from reading UHH and have some very capable birders giving me ideas and insights. Patience is not one of my natural tendencies, so I really have to work on it. I was just about to give up on the Tanager when it showed up. I guess I have to practice patience even more. Have a nice day and great weekend.

Absolutely outstanding jak. Your patience and perseverance paid off big time. You've inspired me to venture out of my comfort zone and explore a place I've not yet visited. Thanks for sharing.

Don

Thanks, Don. Moran Reg. Park is over near the San Joaquin Marsh reserve, so I sometimes explore both on the same day. I'm learning to use some of the birding tools to direct my efforts in that direction. Good luck in branching out. Maybe I'll run into you at Bolsa Chica or one of these other spots. Happy photobirding... jak
