Saw one car drive past my house. Bbrrrrrrrrrr!
I recall my first week of boot camp (Navy) at Great Lakes, IL where it was -10F at 8 PM and we are outside hanging up our washed clothes with pieces of string. This was about Feb 1 back in 1968.
There is some good news about the freezing temps. The Chicago zoo says they have never seen the polar bears so happy. The zoo keepers say the bears are extra playful & frisky.

I followed you there in April (from Kentucky). That was the coldest spring I'd ever seen. We never got out of our pea coats. We didn't have any thing much below 32 degrees, but the wind off Lake Michigan was miserable.
I live in Michigan now, and it's a balmy -11 in Dearborn.

So...... you remember all those days marching around on the "grinder" (I think that is what it was called).
Yes, miserable spring. I went directly to Corps School over at Main Side rite after boot camp.
I forget that nasty place they sent the recruits if they screwed up or had some sort of attitude problem. I was 24 when I reported to boot camp and was by far the oldest im my company.
The thermometer by my front door this A.M.
Here in Minneapolis @ 11am it is -13 under cloudy sky. We are leaving a little package of cookies for the post-person.

Like you, a lot of the memories have faded from boot camp. However, one thing that has stuck in my mind, was how prisoners were treated by the Marines. Our company commander always harped on us about not speaking, or even looking at brig prisoners who were brought to the mess hall for meals.
One day during noon mess, the prisoners were brought in, and we were lined against the wall so they could pass. They maintained really tight order and silent. One prisoner forgot, and spoke to a boot he knew from civilian life. The nearest Marine guard struck this prisoner behind his knees, and the poor sap went down like a sack of potatoes. The Marine reminded him, "NO TALKING!". Never will I forget this moment.
I was a reserve and our boot camp only lasted three weeks, then directly to a two-week cruise at Norfolk, on an old Sumner Class destroyer. I went on active duty the next year, and served with the Seabees, even though I was a fleet rate disbursing clerk.

The newspaper delivery kid will make the trail through the snowdrifts for the mailman to follow.

Guess i shouldn't complain about -17 then! Or about the water pipe that burst in our unfinishef upstairs bathroom and poured into our unfinished family room below. Thank goodness nothing important was damaged, but wallboard and maybe underlayment may have to be replaced. Oh, well.
