While Canada is seriously cold during the winter, it is also very beautiful and unique. Here on Abraham Lake, the methane bubbles get trapped and the ice freezes around them below the surface. you can actually watch them rise to the surface and freeze. This was another very cold morning and the wind was blowing which is what makes the lake clear of snow.

Nice shot Kalina.

[quote=ottopj]I didn't understand this: "This was another very cold morning except the wind was blowing which is what makes the lake clear of ice."

Kalina - amazing picture … thanks for sharing ….

Any idea what caused that long line in the center?

Lastly - where is Abraham Lake? … Which province, or territory?

Had a feeling you'd say that. Looks like a line from a dock to a boat - somewhere …

Is that near Calgary, or further north - Edmonton way?

You have a wonderful “eye” and a well developed vision presented in all your work.

(Second sentence in the initial post.)

If you are referring to "frozen methane" being "incorrect", that's what most people call methane gas that is caught in frozen water.

I agree with DickT and Longshadow...
Unless memories of Physical Chem and thermodynamics seriously fails, the process of bubble expansion within a deformable medium is endothermic, sucking energy from the bubble’s surrounding medium. In water close to freezing, that loss of energy at the methane-water interface results in the water freezing (not the methane). It could be fun to be there with a box of matches at Spring thaw !

And if you read again what OP said, the methane bubbles were surrounded by frozen water....

Kalina, first off, I have to tell you this is a stunning image. Living in PA, we never see anything
quite like this, so I really enjoyed the image and your wonderful explanation!

That said, I can't understand why so many people that responded said you meant
the methane bubble were frozen...you never said that, so I'm confused what they
were thinking (or drinking, perhaps?)

Thank you so much for actually reading my post. I am not sure why anyone feels compelled to tell me the temperature that methane freezes 😊
