I have a Nikon D500 that I have set up to focus with the AF used for backbutton focus and the joystick for Group focus, which is great for bif shots. However, sometime when I move from the AF button to press the joystick for Group focus the Group focus option is not instantly engaged. It’s as though the camera focus is locked and I have to push the joystick again or sometimes go back to the AF button and then use the joystick. Could be something simple like not pushing the joystick button straight on, but I’m not so sure. Thought I would see if others are having similar problems before I experiment further.
I have experienced the exact same thing. I think it's because you have to push the joystick straight in and if you go even on a slight angle it won't work!
Thank you. I was beginning to think it was my technique and not a fault with the camera. I was thinking of doing some more tests with the focus lock off to see if the focal point moves at times when Group focus fails. That may indicate that I’m not hitting the joystick square on. I’m going to New Zealand in a week’s time and was worried I had a problem with the camera. Thank you again for your feedback. This forum is so helpful.
I also have the same issue.

Have you thought about switching the group focus to on of the from buttons? Sometimes when I use the joystick to group focus I move the focus point by mistake on my D500.

You can lock the focus point.
It’s just that the af button and the joystick button are close together so easy to switch between both. May have to try another option if the issue persists.
Yup, that's how it works on the D500. The D5 can focus and move, but you pay dearly for it ($$$)
Thanks Steve. For a travel camera I’m using the D500. Very happy with it. Just wanted to say that your videos have really got me into using manual mode and setting up my camera to try get the most out of it. Just bought your online book Secrets of the Nikon Autofocus System. Can’t put it down. Big fan. Regards Tony Brown

Appears to be an issue with the joystick design, the same on the D850, I have the joystick selected to single spot, because the birds are not moving as much when I need this feature.
it's just me, but I find it more convenient to use the pv button for group focus. Seems that my grip stays tighter, camera more steady, activation easier, than trying to push the joystick straight in.
