At this glacier, the pieces that break off end up in a lagoon, then float through a channel, and end up in the ocean. The waves from the ocean then push the pieces of ice back up onto the black sand beach. Sometimes the area is called diamond beach, because the ice looks like huge diamonds against the black sand.
I should share with all of you something we saw while on the beach--a teenager crawled up, and was standing on, one of the bigger chunks of ice right along the edge of the water for someone to take her picture. A huge wave came in and she fell down onto the piece. She didnm't get off and another wave came and lifted it up-we thought she was going to be washed out to sea
