This bird is not indigenous to Maine; in fact, it is not indigenous to North America. Somehow it found its way to Maine from South America. December 1st, my son-in-law phoned me and said, “You have to get down here to Deering Oaks; we have to leave, but you need to get down here.” When I arrived at Deering Oaks (a city park in Portland), it was like a photography Woodstock. I was there for about an hour and a half and took a plethora of photos. This bird caught the attention of everyone and was an article in the Portland Press Herald.

Since that Saturday, there had been continuing concern as to the hawk’s survival during a Maine winter. The bird was apparently doing fine until the weekend of January 20th, when a couple found it struggling on the ground. They rescued the hawk and took it to the Avian Haven in Freedom, Maine where it is being cared for and expected to return to good health. Avian Haven will probably be its home from now on---a happy ending. Below are various links to this story.
