If you haven't already resolved your problem, I have a brand new Epson V500 that I will sell for $120.00 + shipping. I bought the Epson in anticipation of converting a ton of slides, but after weeding out those to scan, it wasn't worth opening the box. I ended up buying a smaller, cheaper and easier unit to use since my scans didn't need to be high quality.
